Another Big Lion Gets Set Free

It was one of those rare days in Southern Alberta when the sun came up thismorning , bright sun and fresh snow covered the landscape "and no wind."
We recaptured this big tom and removed the GPS collar.
He is a sheep and goat killer but it feels good to let him go knowing it is likely the last time I'll see him.
The hounds caught him on a rock bluff and preasured him enough he jumped into a scrub pine about 5 feet below the rim....one of my hounds climbed the tree and the lion reached out and pulled him up but did not get a hold of him too good, could have been a bad deal.
The tom is about 6 years old and 160lbs..
Over the last 14 months he has rarely ventured out of the National Park boundry so he will likely die of old age in there ...that's ok with me as long as he sires a few more litters and they need to find a home range.

A couple more than usual for sure, we took a young 12 year old fella a third year biology student from the U of L as well as the Provincial Cornivour Manager and 4 others ....a big group but all went smooth..
My brother Rod is the photographer, he is one of the oil company reps for the study and they want data and photos so it works well as he's done alot of that in the past.
Years of riding rough stock on the circut has taken it's toll on him though....his eye sight and hearin for sure, as well as his body with all the abuse, little brother has to watch is back every step now!!!!! .....LOL

It is until you have to do a 60 foot climb up a dead aspen...then the fun parts gone...

The lion is comming out of the immobilization drugs and does not want to leave the road with the snow piled up on the sides, it's important to monitor the cats until they are fairly well recovered to eleminate any possibility of a wreck happening...
There is a river not far off the left bank and some small cuts to the right where he could get into trouble if he falls in to one of those spots and is not able to get out...
Your looking at the far southwest corner of Alberta in Waterton Lakes National Park where the rocks meet the skyline is the boundry between B.C. and Montana...45 yrs I have lived here and it's as impressive now as it was the first time I saw it.
Pretty fortuniate to live within a 10 minute drive of this scenery.....

Need a different kind of spur for that climb. Way to high for me.
