I am just getting started at all this but with as many wolves as we have around it seems the quieter the dog the less chance of them calling in a wolf. It is a great sound but seems the risk is higher the noisier the dog. This isnt going to apply everywhere.

I agree with most that I would rather hear a good race than take game but I use to have a semi silent walker male that only opened when a track got hot which on a few occasions worked out because he surprised Mr. Bobcat.... The dogs would be cold trailing and make a loose and he just happen to figure out the track first and got a jump on the other dogs. I am not sure if the cat thought all the dogs were back with the ones opening up or not but suddenly he was there right on the cat. The other reason I kept him was he had a ton of grit and would pull hair with the best of them.

sounds to me like you got yourself a dog that is going to be what i like. i like a dog that moves a track and dont bark alot. if a dog is barking all the time it is like being around some one that is full of shit you dont know what to beleive. when i first got on this site 3 or 4 years ago i said when my dog barked i was loading my gun and people on here gave me shit about it , i was tellling the truth and that dog i sold for 3500 when i was 20 because of heart sergeory i wouldnt take 20,000 for her now . i never realized what i had . my dad and loyd basey had a breed of dogs going that was made for the style and country i live in . this style might not be worth a shit in some places but her it will flat make some dogs look like puppys. the dog i was talking previosly was 13 years ago. i have seen her in second place and that was to warners5 he had a male dog he called bub that i would say was the best cat dog i have ever seen once it was jumped. he could run head up all out like he was on a deer. i seen it 20 plus times . he was killed in a coyote snair when he was 3. i got off subject but its worth reading.

most guys that dont mind a silent dog on track I suspect probably never had an open dog on a cold track. Once you have them its tough to go back. Its called hound hunting for a reason, listen to the music!!! I dont mind that the cat hears the hounds coming, its usually a sound that he wishes he never heard.

ITS ALL ABOUT HAVING A ONE SILENT DOG ON COLD TRACK AND ONE A DOG THAT OPENS ON A COLD TRACK. NOT BABBLING. WHEN THE SILENT DOG STARTS BARKING U KNOW ITS GETTING GOOD. WORKS WELL WITH A GUY I HUNT WITH

I have both--will open if its trailable, one thats very quiet almost silent until shortly before the jump.I don't know evrybody else mondomuttrunner is talking about, but coastrangecathunting and his dad and small circle of friends have probably owned more hounds than you've been blessed to lay eyes on,with all different styles, colors, and physical builds. Not to mention the same group of guys have probably seen more cats in trees, than most will ever see tracks. And I'm not in the group,so I gain nothing personal by saying this, other than I have respect for them, and have had the priveledge of hunting with him and call him a friend.

Tim,

Your not kidding. I'll bet there is about 1/8 of the cats up in WI. that there is in the South and West. You gotta give mondomuttruner a break though. When most guys get a decent track up here they want to savor it a little. :)

If someone up here doesn't spend most of the year doing things to help the cat population in their hunting area, they are not likely to catch more than 20 cats in a year. I only know of five guys who catch more than 30 cats in a year here. There may be a couple more but I haven't heard of them yet.

I think cathunters who get the chance to go out to some of the areas of the country that have really high cat populations will get their minds blown out. I know mine was.

Mr.Pittman...although i havent had the pleasure of hunting with coastrangecathunting i have had the pleasure of hunting with his father and enjoyed it and learned a lot. Im new to this game and learned a tremendous amount about what to look for in a hound. And i too have the utmost respect for them as people and houndsmen :D Thanks for the input everyone!

A lot has to depend on your definition of tightmouthed or semi silent. I read one post where a dog that opened every hundred yards was considered semi silent and the hunter didn't like it. I would call that dog just a little tightmouthed on a cold track, and I don't like them to open more than that myself. A semi silent dog to me is one that opens every half hour to 45 minutes on a cold track. Many of my young dogs are semi silent at 18 months to 2 yrs, then start opening more so that at about 3 yrs they are just a little tightmouthed (open every 100-150 yds) and by the time they are 5-6 they open more than I like. But most of them bark every breath running jumped. I like a tightmouthed dog on cold track that opens every breath running. I will put up with silent to full open cold trailers if they are exceptional in other respects, but a dog that is silent running jumped ain't going to eat my food long. sometimes in the bad bluffs, especially with an educated cat the silent or semi silent dog will do better because it is right on top of it before the cat knows its around(only if there are no open dogs trailing with it). If I know I am going after an educated cat in the bluffs I will adjust my pack and leave the more open dogs at home.

i don't like silent dogs. if you can't hear the dogs you don't know what they are chasing if they even are chasing anything. once you get to know the difference of the voices of the dog you will be able to if he screwing off or chasing trash. if you have a paid hunter with you, they like to hear a roar in the woods too. they want a good exciting hunt.
