Runt in a litter
Anybody have good luck with the runt of a litter? Just wondering how often they turn out.

I tend to pick the runt if i can. Some of the better dogs I have seen have been runts.

Runts are NO different then the other pups. Best dog I have right now was the runt. Just curious, who or where is this myth about runts perpetuated?

100% with fullcryhounds it is truely a myth.
The home of TOPPER AGAIN bred biggame hounds.

i agree runts tend to be really gritty i guess it might be cause they have to fight to eat

Re: Runt in a litter
Here's a good story.
A friend of mine bought a Cameron female up from the US, paid a BIG $ for her..
Came by to show her to me but I was away, she was in heat and earlier I had mentioned he could breed one of his females to my B&T male.
She had a litter but the first 7 were all still born, then 3 more came along and all seemed well.
"2 DAYS" later #11 was in the straw with the others.
A runt ...that was putting it mild...
At 4 weeks he was still no bigger than a rat and resembled one alot.
5 weeks came and the 3 healthy pups all died the same night????
So here is this lone runt, my son bought him into the house as he was working for the fella that owned the female and it was dead in the middle of a cold winter.
2 weeks later the female was dead?????
To make a long story short this is that runt...... today he is one of my best hounds, unbelievable on a track , lots of grit and solid at the tree.
Close to 95 lbs now and will not quit.
Here he is with his dad, Ol Dan catchin a lion!!!!
Never over look a runt

Re: Runt in a litter
i agree with full cry the runt has the same odds as making a good hound or a cull as the rest of them. the runts sometimes turn out bigger in size than some of their littermates when full grown.
Re: Runt in a litter
best dog I've ever run behind was a runt bitch. my hook dog. several of her runt females have been very good dogs also.

Re: Runt in a litter
Every hound in my pack was the runt of the liter. If the runt makes it in the liter, Ill keep it. Usually they make a very strong hound. They had to fight there liter mates when at the food bowl, most are strong willed.

Re: Runt in a litter
I'm really surprised at this post! I try to get the runt out of the litter too. Others think I'm a little crazy but I have had real good luck with the runt.
ps surprised that others think the same way I do
