All this time I thought there was only one 'superior' breed that could bring a grizzly to bay.......

Just kidding

Baying up a grizz is no big feat for bear dogs getting them to tree is another story, especially a mature bear.

I would say almost all dogs I have owned know the difference between to the two bears. They don't seem to be so quick to pull hair. You need a couple dogs with a screw loose to get them treed.
Some big timber helps also, but what do I really know as I don't have a season in my area.

Looks like there are a couple dogs in there that are giving that bear the "what for". Don't know these fellas from Adam, just thought it was a cool video with some damn nice dogs getting it done. Each to their own I guess. I don't post much on here, find it interesting how arguements on here get rolling over little to nothing. I see some dogs there that I wouldn't mind feeding everyday.

There is no arguing here Lost river, just the facts. You dump decent dogs and eventually the bear will turn and hold their ground. It looks to me like maybe a third of the dogs are doing the work and the rest are there to be a cheerleading squad. Cool video none the less.

the guys and the dogs have some respect for that animal . rightly so. i want my dogs alot tighter than that on a black bear pulling fur,and i would be alot closer on a blackbear also . thats a totally different ball game as far as im concerned .those guys, and hounds are handling that situation the way it needs to be handled . i would definately want hounds i could call off ,and not have to retrieve when it came to a grizz. :shock:jmo

Wasn't there, none of my dogs were. I can say the "Cheer Leaders" were all about 11 months old.

We can't all be so lucky as to have pop up bears like in the Chilcotin.

7 of the 8 dogs were under 2 at the time. the oldest is 6. In my eyes that a pretty whicked start for those dogs. Id feed them all, not just the one im already feeding.

Take a look at what is really going on in the video. First, open country, no cover for the bear to hide in. This is all to the dogs advantage. Second, the bears ears are never pinned back, it is not afraid of any of those dogs. Third, when the bear takes the two step charge, the dogs scatter like broken glass, and not one moved to the back and try to grab the bear. Fourth, not one dog ever got with in 20'. I will bet those dogs act the same way on black bear. If there would have been two or three plotts, that hump back would have been ripping the bark off the tree trying to get a way from the jaws of death. JMO

Wow, didn't realize I was posting some other hound hunters video to have it critiqued to the 9th degree. I am glad to know any decent dog can catch a griz and that plotts would be pulling hair. If you take a moment and look at these fellas other videos you'll see his dogs all work a black bear just a bit different. I will be sure to not waste everyone's valuable time in the future with video of shitty dogs, but if I need my dogs picked apart I will be sure to put of video of mine so I can find out all the things that are wrong with them. Like B&T said, maybe some other guys could post some videos of their dogs with a griz bayed up or a griz in a tree that way we can learn what we should have for a goal to produce in our dogs.
PS Catch, I am not sure what your experience is around griz, but just because that bear's ears aren't laid back doesn't mean he isn't in bizness mode. I haven't been around a ton of them, but enough of them to know he isn't intersted in curling up under a tree with none of those hounds. I have hunted with a friend in BC that runs them on occasion, screw it, not interested in shareing second hand knowledge, that is worth diddly. Best of luck to all... outa here.
Happy hunting, Casey
