I have seen a huge grizz bayed up on the ground and the bear didn't have a care in the world. Not 1 dog would get within 10 feet of the bear. The bear would run when it seen us so we had to have one guy sneak in the other side of the bear and chase the bear towards his so we could catch the dogs. The next day on a big black bear all the dogs were pulling hair and that bear had his hands full. So I would say the dogs do know the difference.

Catch wrote:Take a look at what is really going on in the video. First, open country, no cover for the bear to hide in. This is all to the dogs advantage. Second, the bears ears are never pinned back, it is not afraid of any of those dogs. Third, when the bear takes the two step charge, the dogs scatter like broken glass, and not one moved to the back and try to grab the bear. Fourth, not one dog ever got with in 20'. I will bet those dogs act the same way on black bear. If there would have been two or three plotts, that hump back would have been ripping the bark off the tree trying to get a way from the jaws of death. JMO

Lost River wrote:Wow, didn't realize I was posting some other hound hunters video to have it critiqued to the 9th degree. I am glad to know any decent dog can catch a griz and that plotts would be pulling hair. If you take a moment and look at these fellas other videos you'll see his dogs all work a black bear just a bit different. I will be sure to not waste everyone's valuable time in the future with video of shitty dogs, but if I need my dogs picked apart I will be sure to put of video of mine so I can find out all the things that are wrong with them. Like B&T said, maybe some other guys could post some videos of their dogs with a griz bayed up or a griz in a tree that way we can learn what we should have for a goal to produce in our dogs.
PS Catch, I am not sure what your experience is around griz, but just because that bear's ears aren't laid back doesn't mean he isn't in bizness mode. I haven't been around a ton of them, but enough of them to know he isn't intersted in curling up under a tree with none of those hounds. I have hunted with a friend in BC that runs them on occasion, screw it, not interested in shareing second hand knowledge, that is worth diddly. Best of luck to all... outa here.
Happy hunting, Casey

Lost river....... i never had the balls to put that video on this forum because of guys like catch!!! Its ok you put it on though, I appreciate the kind words from everyone else. ohhh and catch were do you get your 20' from???????? were you there??? nope I was 42 yrds from the bear. i ranged it with my range finder and the dogs were anywere from 38-40 yrds from me. we ran this bitch for 2 hours before she come to bay all flat land then to the hills were she tired out and the dogs got her stopped.80% dogs out there cant even stop a grizz, how do I know cause Ive run them many of times before to know, ask rockymountainhunter or B&Tman. those are two other guys that have seen whata grizz can do.everytime that bear turned to run a dog it would peel the other way and two or three dogs would go in for the chew.EVERYTIME. open your eyes and you will see that. the video is maybe 43 minutes i think. I edited 25 minutes of bear spinning , chewing , snarling and dogs getting rolled because its not appropriate to show on you tube!!!!. I think id be alittle leary after ive been rolled 10 times in the last 25 minuets lol.JMO :beer , happy hunting.

My top griz dog.

Post by Lost River »

Here is a pic of my top dog. He is able to tree griz without ever pulling a hair. I think he offers them some medical marijuana, talks about peace and love... and a short time later the bear is too high to run or fight, just finds a tree to chill out in and hopes no one comes along to harsh on his mello. I will be offering him for stud. Crosses well with angry plotts. :beer

Good dog work. Some of you may want to look at that video again. In case you want to see some damn good dog work, start in at 1:48. Dog comes in from behind and gets a grad, bear turns around and and another two come in for a punch. Anybody who says those dogs aren't getting within 20' needs to revisit the eye doctor! Hell; maybe you should just flat get a new one.

Sure...they could be a little tighter some of the time but like someone said, I wasnt there for the previous 2 hrs. and from what I see, it looks pretty good for a bunch of those dogs.

I sure get a kick out of some of you guys. Unless there is not a pile of dogs on top of that bear then those dogs aren't "bear dogs". BS! I have had those dogs over the years and guess where they are now????? Dead. In fact I've lost 3 in the last 4 years to bears. Guess what else? I've got a few dogs now that will put up more bears than those dead dogs did when they were around. Why? Cause that know when and what to bite. Watch the video again and this time pay attention!

Good video, good dog work and thanks for posting it!

Watch this video.

This is making contact not running from it. Now I know the bear is a lead bear, but do you really think it would make a difference. These two little dogs would chew the shit out of any Grizz, and guess what, they are still alive.

Hair pullers rule!
