How to tell if it is a Boar or a Sow in the tree?

Post by R.M. »

I'm wondering how you guys figure out if you have a boar or sow treed? I always here guys say they treed a sow but I'm not sure how they figured it out. Also in spring bear hunts, how do you make sure sows with cubs don't get killed? or do they get killed?

Females that are nursing you can usualy tell by the tits.Males look for nuts.In both cases be patient and make a good decision.

in my opinion if you cant tell by just looking at it, it isn't big enough to shoot, its the same with a lion, the head is a good way to tell, as is its plumbing most boars that i have caught you could just tell with one look, i have yet to be proven wrong, after seeing enough bears you can look at one and just say ya thats a boar or no thats a sow, a boar will usually have a bigger head, unless its not fully matured. but hey thats just my opinion

I agree, kind of like the guys with lions in the tree, you can tell. If not gender parts, sows usually are short and stocky, with smaller heads, paws etc. If your not sure, tap the tree with a solid stick and get it to move around until your sure

The head. Boars typically have a broader nose with a slight hump on it and a broader flatter head. Sows typically have a more sleak head. That, along with the overall size and afore mentioned plumbing.

i'll agree with the head but breaking the head down in sections helps too. the ears on a sow should be closer together and dependent on size how big or small. look for a indention line down the middle between the ears most females won't have one. broader muzzle is right too. plumbing of course. you state laws should not have a season during the nursing cycle anyway.
