They are nice but if rely on them too much and you have one that really gets with it then you blow a screw you might end up with a new turkey track across your saddle.
It could happen without them but I ride a bronc alot better if I sit up and ride it rather then rely on bucking rolls.

Squaw Titts and much purchase and are pretty much a seditive for the mind of the rider. Mostly thyey just make yer sadle look plumb dude. If you reckon you got a ride a bad one and you feel yer slick fork ain't what you can hang with then borrow that low moose or Assn. from old Mutt and trust to yer luck. Them deals are a lot like them big wild rags with a 2" x 2" square knot . They may not keep you from getting in a sore throat but they will mazke you fel better on the way to see the Doc.
Take a deep seat keep yer eyes on his head and yer mind in the middle!

Re: Bucking rolls
there comes a time for everyone to get off. If things are going that badly I don't want a damn thing trying to keep me in. now thats my opinion and it probably isn't for everyone. but it has come to my attention over the years that occasionally sticking to the end is exactly that or real close.
Bucking rolls don't keep you in that well, just enough to hinder a awkward exit. some of the bear trap saddles with swept back swells and a tall cantle do a much better job of trapping a rider. I get claustrophobic on one. on flat safe terrain I might consider one as not completely deadly. however if your in brush or steep terrain, those one or two exits may be unavailable on a saddle like that. even a horse loosing it's balance can generate enough force to limit your options.

I have wanted to get off a mule just as quick too! Usually out of the embarrassment of being spotted on one...

Re: Bucking rolls
I've never seen anyone use them unless they were riding a Wade saddle. We have a whole wall in the tackroom filled with different saddles but most just set there unless we have company. My favorite is a Wade and yes it has squaw tits. The reason is not for use as buckin rolls though. We get into some pretty steep stuff when we gather and the squaw tits just give a little something for purchase when riding down the hill. A Wade has no swells at all. I only ride this saddle on my older horses and never on a bronc. A Wade is about as easy to come out of as a calf ropin saddle. If I'm startin a colt or have one that likes to get froggy I'll grab my association tree with a high cantle. This doesn't make one immune to a sudden departure though, but it's better than the Wade. One of the best things I can think of if you wanna little more security is chaps or chinks. Leather on leather has a little more stick to it than does denim on leather. Its still not a cure all but does help even with just normal riding.

Thunder Basin grasslands,
you are right about leather on leather and throw just a little pitch under there and it might help you weather the storm. Maybe?

Re: Bucking rolls
I use em all the time. Not dependant on them just makes a difference when one jumps sideways or goin down the steep stuff or a suck back. You just never know. Just stand em up as much as ya can and not back. I've seen people set them Back right against their thigh, just makes a new place for a saddle sore in my opinion. Standing them up means they're there if ya need em, out of the way if ya don't. Never had a problem getting out of a saddle with them in a situation. Saddle bags, coats, antlers and back cinches are way more likely to get ya in trouble then tits. That's just how I feel. Roper with tits. Goodluck
Re: Bucking rolls
I finally got tired of seeing my wife in a cast because her horse kept disapearing out from under her while she was training it ,40 something year old woman, versus catty litttle performance bred QH Broke her wrist twice, same deal, one second firmly seated, next second horse is gone and standing five feet to the left looking at her on the ground LOL. Installed some tits and no more disapearing horse. She hated them at first, said they looked "dorky" then they helped her stay on a few times and now it is as if she invented the dang things!
The horse is broke now and I suggested she could probably take those off, she said are you crazy, I'm looking for another project and I'll need em!
So, I guess it is probably better to have them and not need them rather than need them and not have em.

Re: Bucking rolls
It's impossible for any one thing to work on every horse, or for every person. What works for me or you may not be feasible for someone else. That being said, if it works for your outfit then keep doin it. If you wanna try something new then do it. It shouldn't matter what someone else does, says or thinks. Their situation aint your situation. Hell I used to laugh at the old guys that used a nightlatch. Now that I'm 38 and have had a broke back I think a nightlatch looks just fine on my riggin'. Squaw tits aint that costly so if a person is kinda curious, then I'd try'em.
