Well Folks I have to admit that as hards as it is to say I was wrong, I am saying it!
To night in between Cat Races Dad and I talked to a very good friend in Oregon who hunts in some very Bad Country...a fellow whose word is a solid as gold with us.
This Hunter related a story about one of his DOGS catching a Bobcat alone awhile back!
Now I know that in the Snow out west and up north this is done all the time, but where this fellow hunts not so much....yet he GOTERDONE, on dry ground no less.
I know he will be reading this so, if he can get over being bashful and shy...maybe he will tell you all about it.
It is a Hell of a story!

Re: Eating Crow - 1 Dog Catches a Bobcat
Here is a dog (now deceased) that could do magic. She was never hunted on cats out of the snow but what she did in just about any kind of snow is downright kreepy. David Peightal raised her. One Dog - One Cat - Magic!

Her name was Camo. She was out of Wick's Camo Jug and her mother was a crossbred dog that was 1/2 plott and 1/2 border collie.
David has some great stories about this dog. Maybe when he gets back on he can tell some of the great ones on this dog.

Dog Boy, now thats funny, you clay boys dont have to eat crow much, but you own sorry mutts, you learn the taste of crow, and get use to it
Heck, I called dog boy, and told him, I was up for the challenge, I had a mutt that catches a cat once in a while, send money, and I would see him soon, in Ark, or Fl. Even if its thick brush, water etc, a free trip isnt all bad. He forgot to explain, if i didnt catch a cat with my one dog wonder in that week, i had to pay him my expenses back
Goes to show you once again, I didnt read the fine print

Re: Eating Crow - 1 Dog Catches a Bobcat
It happens all the time in Oregon. Without snow. I gave a dog away last season because she had gotten so old. Every season she would get out on the other dogs, or turn around and get the track going the right way. Any way it wasn't uncommon for her to be the only dog to trail, jump, and tree cats all by herself. Most guys are going to hunt more than one dog but in the Pacific Northwest all it takes is one good dog to consistantly catch bobcat. There is a newer hunter I know that purchased a real nice hound to get going right. He caught 30+ cats with that dog doing all the work. While maintaining a full time job. It may be tougher down in AR but in Oregon it isn't some impossible feat at all.
I prefer to hunt multiple dogs myself.

I appreciate any bobcat hound. if it can catch alone that is great but it better be a thinking running sob cause I don't run just one hound either. I think terrain and conditions have much to do with it. in my areas cats hunt over much bigger areas on average and therefor travel much more. if you hit a hard running cat it is almost impossible to catch him with one hound because conditions leave big scent gaps that a single hound will miss turns on loosing valuable time and turning it back into a slow trail. I've had a couple hounds that could catch cats one on one but the hard ones invariable got away. but to really see a increase throw a few more hounds in to help and the catch percentage almost tripled. I like a smart cat dog that is a requirement

Pegleg,
Very well said!
Cat and Bear, you are too much! You know that if you had brought Ole Willie here in his youth, and given some Breaks he could have probably caught and treed Cats here alone.
I sure wish the fellow who I talked about above would post a Picture of his "CATKILLER".....as maybe we are all using the wrong kind of Mutts!

My grandpa has a funny saying it goes- You have your hounds, then there's bobcat dog's. In this family many, many years ago grandpa had a bobcat dog that was know through out the county @ times when the cats got to thick he would loan the dog out to other ranchers and thin their cats out a bit. The dog's name was wing he was a pure border collie out of california as a pup. of coarse he said the tracks were pretty hot. But said old wing would sure make his cougar dogs look silly @ times. Thankyou J.W.

once upon a time there was a want to be timber cutter. after a hard days work he and his fellow want to bees were heading down a logging road on there way to get some cold beer. up ahead in the road mr. bob trotted across . stop said one of the arrigant want to bees. turning out his jadged / fox terrier cross and the race was on. out of the brairs came the cat and dog about 3 feet behind. they went into some more brush and the brush was shaking like hell , he said they are fighting . one guy asked if that cat could kill the dog . ya i guess was the responce. 2 of the guys dive over the hill thinking they are going to save the dog. shit thats my dog i guess i better go too thought the other man. being he was smarter than the other 2 gents he took a faster route and got there first. the cat and dog had broke apart and were bayed under a log , after a couple times of circling the cat ,gator the dog got it by the neck and the trusting helper grabbed it by its back legs and pulled them out. dog on one end helper on the other the job got done. gator has a couple holes but he was pretty proud. that is his 4th solo cat. not bad for a 25 pound bad ass. he is also for sale 20,000 dollars
