Looking for a walker pup

Post by kbe119 »

Hey all I'm new to this and started out thinking about getting a redbone but thinking about a walker instead. Anyone know a good breeder near Oregon. It seems like most everything i find is on the other side of the country. An old friend of mine out here runs walkers so I will be trying to get a hold of him for some help too. But if you have any ideas sent me a line. Thanks. Kyle

hello it's not a bad sport to get together with your kids on. sure adds to the together time. if you mentioned what type of game you plan on running it may help some one point you in the right direction. have you gone hunting with anyone recently to see whats out there and the different styles of hound? find what works and what you like it's hard to appreciate even a good hound if it isn't what you like.
there's also a list of books and publications on here you can go through and find online. most won't deal with modern terminology but some terms maybe covered. try to read what context it is used in.
good luck..

Welcome to the sport, If I had one piece of advice starting out dont get color blind when looking for your first hound. Choose a hound by its skills not by its color. JMO

Good call on starting out coon hunting. The way I see it the more game you & your dog see in a tree the faster both of you will learn. The fundimintals are the same as cat hunting so the experience will carry over. Some people get so affixiated with wanting to be a cat hunter they skip the fundimentals, get frustrated & quit, or the lack of seeing game in a tree makes training their dog take 3 times longer than it should have. One thing you need to do is start out with a dog that has cat minded breeding, when your dogs ready this one thing will make your transition from coon hunter to cat hunter possible. Remember to keep your head up and stay positive, everything that happens out in the woods with your dogs happens for a reason and is a learning experience, take away a positive learning experience from everything that happens, if you can do this for a couple years then you will well be on your way. Good luck & have fun. John.

I used to live down in your neck of the wood and used to hunt around Powers Sixes and Tioga. Just sent a message to a Guy in Myrtle Point about some pups he has for sale. Hope to get one we will see if things work out. Still have family in Myrtle Point and Coquille.

My Uncle still lives there Dick Evans. Back in the day my grandparents used to own what used to be the dairy on both sides of hwy 42 on the north end of town along the straight stretch. Then my mom still lives in Coquille. I saw JC has some pups up for sale you know how old they are?
