David, I find your "Mystical relationship" with wolves Quite interesting. While I have mixed emotions about gating up public lands and lawsuits that block timbersales, my relationship with the wolves around here doesn't seem to have an upside. Last week the snow was thin and the boys and I put down on a bobcat about nine a.m. We ran it over the top of this ridge where we lost all signal on the Garmin as well as telemetry. We were able to sled an old skid road about three miles and get to with in hearing distance of the dogs. About nine or ten wolves had just come through the area. I got this sick feeling. We sent a young feller to the top of the mountain. The dogs had gone back down and ended up in the bottom of this big nasty canyon. Long story short, we ran this cat until about eight pm. Wolves were howling all around this entire drainage I was sick until the last dog got pulled off the track. Conditins were not good and the dogs just could not pressure this cat enough to tree it. But I was reminded of last year when the wolves skinned one of our dogs alive and we spent about eight grand putting her back together. One day we passed up sixteen bobcat tracks because the wolves were everywhere. We do not have the luxury of "staying with" our dogs. When we throw down, we may not hear our dogs for several hours. I hope when my current hounds are all retired and I can spend my winters thinning wolves, I will be able to feel the same "magic" you do.

blackpaws wrote:check the wisconsin regs but i am 99.9% sure you don't need a cat tag with you to run cats. the only time you need a tag is when the cat is going to be harvested by the person with the tag. no small games license is needed either as long as you aren't goint ot kill anything you don't need a license. also, there is no pursuit license for bobcats in wisconsin so run as many as you want. just don't carry a gun.

.

I beleive that they have now changed this law and you can't run cats without a kill tag during the open season. After season you still can chase them but on years like this when we had deep snow all year.....Well you best not be putting on any little ones unless you want to kill them.
