how do you like your hounds

Post by dukes71799 »

so i have only been houndn a couple years and know everything there is to know. lol. i have only bobcat hunted. i have a couple dogs less then 9 mo old. i have noticed on here some guys like their dogs real gritty. i know its different for bears, hogs, ect. how many of you teach your dogs to sit, lay down and stay, not jump on you when you feed. and to get along with other dogs. i work alot and lately have been working more than normal and have got crap from a couple of people of how well behaved my dogs are. (like the phrase turning a hoe into a house wife). i let them in the house quite often and they stay on their bed. they are part of the family. i know its got to be a lot different with alot more dogs. but how do you guys do it.

this is a 64 million dollar question and you will probably get the same amount of diff answers. i myself like a smaller dog 40 to 50 pounds, i like them gritty but not a kamakazi, above average fast, good mouth, tight compact built, manners is a big deal to me especially since my 19 month old is my feeding buddy and crawls in and out of their houses and tries to ride them and etc, i do not allow my dogs to jump on ppl or bark for no reason around the house, i make mine lead so anyone can handle them, no food aggression is allowed toward dog or person, i also like for them to come when i call, mine do not enter the house UNLESS they are hurt real bad, mine are like family too but they belong outside, i do not keep a dog that is just plain nasty as far as make a lot look like a pig pen in 24 hours or extremely destructive, all mine must be able to strike trail and jump their own bear i do not keep pack dogs and definatly not an ill hair on it or ill bone in it. best motto i have ever heard and put into use is you can feed a good one just as good as you can feed a bad one.

Mine are in the house when I'm home. But that may change soon so I can raise a couple more pups if I find some I want. But I feel the first year is the most crucial time for any critter including humans. I want my dogs where anybody or pets can be around. No ill manners, no fighting., no BS.

I'm with plottpappaw, except I always feed my dogs separately so food aggression is somewhat tolerated esp. with the older dogs. I don't have time to sit on a bucket and watch dogs eat together. I also think that if I could, I would have all my dogs with me all the time, even in the house. I like being around my dogs as much as I can, but too many dogs for that. Most live outside except for any type of injured dog and they get crated. A few live in the house.

I like mine a little crazy... but they have good manners the sit when u put food in there bowls untill I say OK then they can all eat. About the barking they really don't bark unless there is somebody that they don't now next to there pen I don't mind that because they tell me when somebody doesn't belong back there. They have a 2 acre pen that has 3 stans of electric cattle fence 2 run around in so there isn't a need 4 barking. I have a lab that stays in side every night then I have a plott that stayes in side most of the time but I. Rotate all the hounds so they all git to stay inside at lease 2 to 3 times a month so they stay potty tranned. And all now not to potty inside. Sit,heal, lay on there bead, not to jump up unless its me and I tell them to. The hound are preatty well behave nothing comared to my lab. All the dogs are a part of the family and all of them do awsome with my 10 month old babby girl. And for my 4 year old she can take any of them in her bead room and play dress up with them and they just stand there while she dresses them up. The only bad part is that if one gets killed the old lady and the little girls would be devistated. As for hunting I'm also still trying to get into it my self. This will be my second year and so far I. Think I like them really gritty, fast, and some what of a cold to meduim nose. Thanks CASEY

Not sure how I like-em!!! Thought I liked-em bawl mouthed but our old silent hound treed more bobcats.... Thought I liked-em cold nosed but don't have the time to run two day old tracks!....Thought I liked-em big and long legged but didn't expect to find them sleeping in the middle of my bed!!!....Thought I liked-em long eared but hadn't heard of ear cleaning and meds back then....Thought I liked-em trash-broke and consistent but now each hunt is filled with anticipation – What amazingly dumb stunt will they pull this time? I guess I just like hounds however they happen to turn out!!!

i feed all mine seperate too but if i have puppies loose i don't like it if they get snapped at or jumped on and don't want them growling at another hound period. for my ownself i refuse to have any type of aggression.

Manners for sure, I hate idiot dogs that don't listen and act stupid as hell, no matter how good someones dog is on the trail, if it acts like a idiot other times I won't like em. But thats just me. When i feed, I got my dogs to stay back a few feet, and until i say ok or pet em on the head they don't come in, but once i say ok they eat like I havent fed em in a month!! I love a dog that listens, makes a hunting trip a little easier!!

My hounds most and first of all must listen.I start this as soon as i get them. NO means NO. When i feed they all have to get on top of there dog box and give me there paw when i ask , then they get to eat only when i say eat. When at home i can leave my hounds run around the yard ( if i`m watching them) and they will not take off to the bush. different story when the see the tracking collars. They go crazy. I will put my collars on the dogs at there dog house and unhook them from there and tell them to load up and they will run straight to the truck and in the box. It just makes thing alot nicer when a hound listens and is not an idiot. No barking at home for nothing (unless for a reason) or in the dog box. I Can`t stand a box of barking dogs when your trying to strike a track. WON`T tolerate a dog box of barking dogs when your trying to start a cold track, or any track at that. When coming out of the bush after a tree most of my hounds will follow me out with out a leash, I do have the odd cement head that needs to lead out, But it will follow behind me, not drag me out. As long as they can run the track and be at the tree, when i get there they have a dog house at home. I dont care so much if they are not load barkers, or bark alot on track, or the fastest hound around.ect, but Must have some grit. As long as they are there, treeing there heart out. I have a spot for them.
