Question for cat hunters
I know that most people who hunt with dogs started out hunting bear, coon, fox, lion or maybe all the above, and then at some point decided to hunt strictly bobcats and nothing else. Was curious as to why this all came about. I really like to hunt bobbers myself, and may end up strictly hunting them at some point in the very near future. Look forward to your response. Nick
Re: Question for cat hunters
i suppose it maybe a family heritage thing or just a progression to more difficult game. then in some cases those cat furs bring more cash then a coon. i run them because it's easier to start a bobcat track and harder to finish.

Re: Question for cat hunters
To me it is the biggest challenge to hunt with a hound. It takes better dogs more training and more knowledge of the animal than any other game hunted with a hound yo cat them on a regular bases. I feel when a hound man grows up he becomes a cat hunter. The next best thing is bare ground lion hunting. Dewey

I agree with the posts above. It's the ultimate challenge and the greatest satisfaction when you get to the tree, for both you and your dogs.
Nick, do you hunt an all Leopard pack? Have you found some strains of Leopards do better on bobs than others? Nick

Re: Question for cat hunters
Yeah I have all Leopards. I have all young dogs right now and am having alittle problem gettin them going good cause I lost my old male dog, and dont have a lead dog now. He was agood dog on bear and fox but really surprised me how well he did on cats. I had him, a sister to him and his daughter that did real well on cats, but all three are dead now. They were McDuffie strain dogs, but they all went back to an old dog Randy got from Richard that was called Romer. I hunted with him and he was quite a dog. Mose, Shine and Hark(the three dogs I talked about above) all went back to him, and their mothers were all heavy Tig bred, as was Romer. I tell ya, I sure wish I had them dogs back now
I have 3 pups off of Mose from 2 differant litters that are not quite a year old and one is a started dog that is about a year and a half old, so I hope I can get them lined out right, as I have high hopes for them. I hear the jug bred dogs do well on cats but have not seen it personally, and the McDuffie dogs down from Tig and his son Hobo do well on them to, as I have hunted both. Had a Meeks strain dog once that was dirty cold nosed, but she just didnt seem to be able to pick up her head and go with it like she should have and she was not very fast at all.

Re: Question for cat hunters
Coyotes don't tree and they run too far relative to the gas it takes to hunt them. That being said, I join in with some friends fairly often because I like to shoot.
Bear are too easy to trail and have the same run to gas ratio. Plus, bear hunting is to much about the fight/bay. If I was into dogs for the fighting I'd rather see terrier work.
Coon hunting is fun but it's just too easy to keep me going out in the dark. I like daylight hunting a lot better because I get to see the great outdoors and not just the end of my light beam.
Gray fox is great and about equal for fun.
Not very many people will feel the same way about all of these things. This is just a peak at how this hound guy came about cat hunting.
Cats are great looking animals, I get to hunt them in the daytime, some cats are almost as tricky as gray fox and I can get in the race enough to keep me a part of the hunt without having to go back to the truck. Besides, I just can't seem to get enough.

Re: Question for cat hunters
Hey Dan, the fox can sure be some fun, alot run just like a cat and can sure be tricky. There is really no coon huntin left here and yotes are considered trash. Like the bear hunting but it is a 3 hour round trip to do it plus the huntin time and gas prices are just getting higher. Have seen your dogs on the message boards and they are nice looking dogs. Just curious, what dog or dogs do you like the best for bobbers that you have?
Re: Question for cat hunters

Re: Question for cat hunters
Nick, I'm getting a pup from Randy in a few weeks out of Shine II and Mugshot. I hope to make a cat dog out of him. I have a few dogs that go back to Lakers, Clark, Ganus,.........I really like the dogs I have now and they do well on cats for me. I hope you find what your looking for. I spent years and way too much money looking for good bobcat dogs.

Re: Question for cat hunters
The first guy to take me hound hunting was a bobcat hunter so that is where I got my start. It sure can be exciting and tough at times. There is noting like a twisting and turning jumped race. I also like lion hunting but you just don't get the same type of action.

Re: Question for cat hunters
Nick, the Shine dog is a nice little fast dog, Mugs is a pretty darn good dog on cats, he doesnt say much trailing but at the jump he is more open and is a nice tree dog, the pup sure could make a nice dog on cats.
