Tell me if anything like this has happened to you? You prolly aint gonna believe me when i tell you this but true story! Ok my buddy from bloomer usually goes way up north by land they own to hunt, but they called me up the night before to come in my area to hunt wit our crew. He came bout 430 sunday morning we headed out bout 5 to start checking baits. When he radioed me to let me kno he is got a pretty good rig. So when i came over he was looking for tracks while my buddy sherek (sherek is one of people in our main group) was ready to let the dogs go. My buddy from bloomer says no its a sow and 2 cubs. I told him "Hey the way we hunt around here is we dont look a tracks we run every kind of bear." So the whole crew came and we all put a few dogs on it! they went flying in their i headed to the next road to get in front and they sat for a little bit to listen and the yelled on the radioed treed. I was thinking holy shit that was fast. I thought they were bayed because of the noise we heard! We got their and their was 2 sows and 4 cubs in the same trees the cubs were all together an the sows were fighting and pissed all over and the dogs treed harder then ever! it was insane u had to be their! Anything like that happened to anyone else?

Re: Coolest bears stories
Last summer during training season we jumped a 180 pounder off one of our baits and the dogs lined it out going towards a low spot where they like to cross the main highway. I was sitting on the side of the highway listening to the race coming and waiting to see the bear. We finallly seen it cross about 300 yards infront of us. I slammed the truck into gear to race up and dump the box and when i almost got to the crossing i looked in the rearview mirror and another bigger bear ran out right behind me and almost clipped the hitch in my truck! Never ran two out like that before.

Re: Coolest bears stories
Seen a 250(ish)lb bear fall out of a tree from about 20 feet up (back first) and squash a guy.. He went down like an aluminum can.. My first thought was "thank god we are in cell phone service so he can get airlifted out of here" then.. "thank god the dogs were tied back"
He was fine BTW.. Jumped right back up after the bear used him as a springboard
Never seen a bear do tha before.. Guess he was in a little to much of a hurry to come down the tree...

Re: Coolest bears stories
We had an interesting bear race a couple years ago. I got off work later than normal one night, but was still going to try to sneak out for a run. I gave call to my buddy's and they said they hadn't found anything yet but were out looking. A few minutes later I get a call back saying to hurry up, they got one to try. I was still a solid 15 minutes away so I told them to go ahead and give it a whirl. They probably wouldn't have waited for me anyway.
In any case, I can hear the hunt going on the radio and it's sounding good. I know exactly where they are headed and so do they. I'm red-lining my truck trying to make it in time to that crossing. I'm still about 5 minutes out and I know I'm not going to make it. I hear on the radio that the bear had crossed, knowing full well that I'm too late. I'm instantly deflated and pissed, that was probably my only chance at a bear run for the night Damn work always gets in the way. I come around the corner to see their last dog hitting the woods. At about the same instant I look down the road about 3/4 of a mile and see another bear crossing the road going the exact same way. Just a little fellar with no dogs on it and perfect for a run. I fly up there and toss my mutts on it and they take off.
So I'm standing there and I can hear the massive mess that is going to happen. My race is veering right and theirs is veering left and we are heading for a massive clusterfck of dogs mix matchng races and ja good old fashioned goat rodeo. As the races come together all the dogs hook up going the same way. I figured that my dogs just honored in to the other race and one of the bear just slipped out. The dogs do a couple little hot laps and then come up treed. I figured shoot, at least I got in on a race. Well we get to the tree and look up to find BOTH bear are up the same tree. Not sure how it happened but it did. They must have been a couple little yearlings hanging out with each and hooked up on the run. Treed a lot of multiple bear before, but never one where they were started in different hunts and ended up together.

Re: Coolest bears stories
one of the cool ones, I had was it was the 4th of July, I turned loose behind the house, no tourist, traffic etc. The bear done just what I didnt want. Straight west, 7 miles, crossed the highway, catching dogs, and the last one headed south toward the lake. I got down there, and for some reason was beeping him in the water in the bay, didnt make sense, went to a big campground, and he was back toward the point, went to the point, he was toward the campground, Now it gets interesting. The owner, and also town chairman, meets me driving in, and said,my dog, had the bear caught under the truck, by the showers. People started showing up from all over, there was 200 campsites rented that weekend. All the sudden is a line coming toward me, Oh shit. Guys said, they were cooking hotdogs on the fire, and old smokey and the bear jumped it, one guy reached in his truck, and the bear hit the door, and slammed him, among other interesting stories. Anyway, about that time, the neighbor of the campground called, and said, there was a bear in the tree, and a dog barking under it. So, me, the town chairman, and at least a hundred people walked to the tree. There smoke sure enough had it treed, 150lbr. Then a pontoon boat and fishing boat pulls up, as we wasnt fiftey feet off the water, and the fishing boat said, he seen the bear swim the bay, and smoke behind him, so he grabbed smokey, and idled behind the bear, across the bay, which was about a quarter mile, the bear hit the other side, and smoke jumped out of the boat, and the race was on again. Where it went to the showers and campground. Then to the neighbors. Anyway, all was well, I joked and kept everyone calm, and got video of smoke and the bear. Now with all the people I was worried about where the bear would go next, so i tapped the tree, and down it came, and went the opposite direction toward the woods again, so all was safe, and everyone was calm, that was back in 1996, and to this day, I have never had a bear run that way since, and I dont want to, and to this day, the tourist around the lake now know me, and talk about that fourth of july, and that goofy bear, dog and hunter. And for a christmas gift, I gave the town chairman, a copy of the video LOL

Re: Coolest bears stories
We chased this bear this past weekend. And the dogs chased it over this little hill so we ran up ther expecting to get good video. But end up with the bear coming back over the hill and me and my friends scatter as the bear turns and runs for the brush.

Re: Coolest bears stories
When i was about 8 years old our pack of deer hounds had a bear bayed up in the woods. my uncle and i walked in expecting them to have caught a young or wounded deer and when we got about 20yrds from them we could finally could tell it was a bear. when we got to the opening the bear slapped a dog (full grown walker) and it flew about 10-15 yards through the woods and knocked my uncle square in the chest. we ended up getting all the dogs off the bear and every one even the dogs were uninjured. we didnt killl the bear because it wasnt bear season and we knew the bear hunters would have a fit if they found out.
The other story my granddad told me, he said when he was about 25 years old or so an old guy came up to him in a store and told him he had a bear problem. ended up that the man was making moonshine and every night the bear would come in and eat the mash or whatever it is they make it out of. my grandad waited until it was a full moon because they didnt have flashlights then and he siad the bear came in stumbling and falling over (obviously drunk) and he shot it with a fox double barrel shotgun (the only gun had and could afford then).
Those are the only crazy bear stories i got but i do have a ton about deer hunting with dogs.

Re: Coolest bears stories
I dont know about cool but it dont happen everyday, this little running bear the hounds were on ran into the front driver side of my truck while I was on a two track where they always cross in a narrow(40yds) wide stretch of the swamp that goes across this two track into a much bigger part of the swamp.

Re: Coolest bears stories
I shot a bear out of the tree, and on the way down, it landed on a smaller tree, and the smaller tree stabbed it through the stomach. We had to go back to the truck for a chain saw to get it down.
Another time, I shot a big bear in the tree and one foot got hung up and we couldn't get it down. I called a local logger to help, and he started to climb the tree with his cleats on and no support rope wrapped around the tree.
He got up about 50 feet by hanging on to the tree bark until it broke loose on him and he came down and landed on his back in about 2 feet of snow. he was unhurt, and we finally got the bear down.
My hounds have never walked behind a bear. They either fight or put them up a tree. But one night my dogs struck a track off the box, and took off screaming. I managed to catch them at the top of a ridge. I was stopped in my truck and listening to them comming towards me. They were walking and booing instead of chopping like they always do. I quietly grabbed my 44 mag and a flash lite and went to them. I kept the light off so they wouldn't break and run. I got about 20 feet away in a fairly clear spot and turn the lite on them. It was big foot. It scared the hell out of me, and I guess I scared the hell out of it too, because it took off, not in a run but in a fast stride. I called the dogs, and they came to me. When I got back to the truck, and told the other guys with me, what I saw, they laughed. True story in Quincy California.
