training question
training question
Just got a couple of Walker pups. They are about nine weeks old. Just wondering if that is too early to start having them follow a drag. I'm also curious as to what a good brand of coon scent is. I've seen several advertised but don't know what to buy. If anybody has any suggestions I'd appreciate it.

Its never too early to start working a pup. But remember they are pups and I feel you should let them be pups. Let them wander around and explore. Get them to use their natural instinct of hunting. Also can be working them on coming to you at this time. Slowly start working with them on a hide or some scent. Have them follow it around. As they get older work drags and trees.

Re: training question
PUT A HANDLE ON THEM...
teach them the basics.
load, lead, heel, come on command... and train yourself!
buy one of the Walk With Wick books...
they will help you a lot.
on the laying drags.. some but do not over do it.
scents---- well nothing beats the real thing... if you insist on getting some Cronk's or Grawes...
find a fresh road kill is a little better that either but be aware that in your state the rules concerning possessing a hide taken by any method out of season....

Re: training question
Hot dogs!! We started my pup on hot dog drags and did only that until 4 months. We taught him basic commands, but didn't do anything hunting related other than that for the first little while.

Re: training question
Thanks for all of the replies and info. Don't want to push it but I'm anxious to start working them also. Our pursuit season for coons starts September 1st and open season starts, November 15. Will they be ready to start hunting at six or seven months or am I better off waiting until later in the season or next year?
