I ran walkers in texas on hogs/coons and miss it....and just got my first black bear in alaska where i live and want to run bear dogs now!!!!
But, i can't find a black bear dog breeder or forum in alaska....
Anyone got any info?
And, what is a thick haired bear dog to run up here.....i love my walkers, but, we do up to -50, but, could have heated dog houses...we don't run the bears til it gets up over 20 since they are still in teh holes....but, it would be a long, boring winter, guess I could put them on a dog sled when it is warmer than -20 adn put vests on to run them for exercise....
but is there a better dog for the cold..
i'm looking for a female and male whatever....

Russians hunt alot of bears and they use a breed called a Laika predominately.
Looks like a husky/elkhound, but is specifically bred for hunting bear and boar.
Very quick and agile, you can find them on Youtube hunting.

If I we you I would look into the Karelian Bear Dog's. Can you even run dogs up there in Alaska? I have been wanting to go back to Alaska for yrs but giving up my hounds has kept me from it. What part of the state are you in?

Yes, hunting black bear with dogs is legal, that is the only thing you can hunt...
gret pic, but, do you really want a dog that will get a hold of a bear? you usually loose dogs that way!!!
know any breeders that handle laika's?...like the hair on it...
thought about cross breeding the walker with a sled dog...and run them in the winter...that is very popular up here, they like the hound build and endurance breed into the huskies, etc...

I know no breeders of Laikas or Karelians. I just threw it out there to help you in your search.
Many hunters work their dogs on chained bear first, to teach them manners, as they can be aggressive with game, but they are very agile and very fast, almost fox like on their feet.
If wolves hear a hound bay, you have a dead dog..
Laikas and Karelians are silent until game is bayed.

Sent you a PM
My 2 blueticks do pretty well up here in Wasilla. I built a big insulated house and the inside temp stays above 30. I also bought a skijoring setup for winter exercise. that was a little harder than I thought it would be.
