Mink?

Post by Pete E »

Are hounds used to hunt Mink at all in the US?

Prior to the hunting with hounds ban in the UK, it was a fairly wide spread method of controlling Mink.

It has its origins in the much old Otter hounds, but when otter numbers declined and they eventually became protected, many of the Hunts switched to hunting mink...

Mink are not a native of the UK and became establised after escaping (or being released) from fur farms.

The increase in Mink devasted a lot of our smaller native riverside wildlife...

I am not a Hound hunter myself, but prior to the ban, I did go out with the local Mink hounds when they were hunting near-by and really enjoyed it...Sadly, at least for the moment, it is a form of hunting now gone, but there hopes the ban will be repealed or at least modified to allow this type of hunt to resume..

(PS Sorry if this post is in the wrong forum! Mods please fell free to move it..)

Kordog,

You have the chance to have the first set of Mink hounds in the US!

Re our "Ban", strange to say, there are more people out following the hounds now than ever. Some folks are simply ignoring the ban and carrying on, while others are exploiting loop holes and badly written legislation to carry on, but in a modified form..

Some Hunters don't actually want the ban over turned, as they feel they can still hunt as things stand, but if any future Labour Government reinstated the ban again, they might do a better job next time...

The Greens and Bunny Huggers want to re introduce the Wolf to Scotland which would be a step up from coyotes!

The have this strange notion that wolves would prey on wild, fast Red deer and walk right by those slow ponderous sheep that is the back bone of the hill farmers up there...

Still, a few wolves around the place might make the craig rats and mountain bikers go somewhere else! :D
