skunk question
Say I caught a skunk in a pocket set with a coilspring trap. How do I get the skunk out. I would like to have a nice tanned wide strip skunk skin but how would I kill him and or get him out without him spraying me?
Re: skunk question
Sneak up behing him, and hold his tail in the air. they cant spray if you hold their tail up.

Re: skunk question
There's guys on here that have skunk sets that are made for gassing the skunk so they go to sleep without spraying. There is no other way that I know of to get him without spraying. I've tried lots of suggestions and nothing works. Besides they stink so bad without spraying. So figure out the gas set up, just tuff it out, or give up your skunk skin dreams.

Re: skunk question
I found two things that work, one if you can get to him with out him seeing you and drowned him but leave him in there for atleast 5 min. 10 min. is bettter they can hold there breath for a long time. The second and best way is to use a kill pole loaded with 10 cc of acetone hit it on the side aim for where the heart should be, be fast and they will not spray at all. Then just sit back and wait for him to die it happens fast, then when you pull him out use his legs not his tail. Then use gel supper glue and coat his vent area very well let it dry and your good to go with the skinning. If you plan on trapping more skunks send me a PM I will point u in the right area to get some more good info. They are not worth much for pelt traping $2-$5 for the pelts but the essence is were the money is, I know more then a few guys that paid for all of there trapping fuel prices with skunk essence.

Re: skunk question
I use a trap called a Plastic Catch box trap. They are designed to catch skunks. They are solid plastic with a sheet metal door. Once caught, I use CO2 or Chloroform to put them down. The skunks never spray because they feel secure inside the box. They work great. I catch around 100 skunks each year.
Young skunks can be picked up by holding thier tails under them and they won't spray. Young skunks get caught in window wells all the time and I just pick them up and let them go. Older ones caught like this need to be knocked out with Chloroform then you can get them out and let them go.
Another option would be to just buy a tanned hide on Taxidermy.net for around $40.

Re: skunk question
I'm not using plastic skunk traps. I'm talking making a pocket set for coon or mink. Its a foothold trap. I catch a skunk how do I get it out without getting sprayed, that's the question not how to make sets for skunk. I'm not trying to catch them! But any trapper knows, IT HAPPENS. I don't use drowner rigs.

Make a kill pole and hit it with acetone thats the only way I know of.

CO2 you can get at any Napa store or any welding supply. Chloroform is sold only to Wildlife Control agents.

Re: skunk question
That's a big 10-4 driver!
Re: skunk question
Get a long pole and tie a copper rabbit snare on the end. After the beast has been there quite a while he will be calm. Now reach with the pole and get the snare on its neck. Now you need a tree with a limb close to lift up and hook it (the pole) over the limb. I've never tried this but an old trapper said that they would not spray. Good luck
Re: skunk question
Shooting them in the lungs will cut down on the chance of spraying. Still can happen but rare for me.
