Training help
I have a 1 1/2 yr old cur,he runs bear and puts them up with out help,he just started this year,I don't have any dogs to run with him yet,I haven't shot any out to him,my ? is he won't stay at tree till I get there,he leaves tree and comes back to me,bear bails out and is gone,I too only started running bear with dogs so I don't know what to do.Does he need help and should I stop running him alone. He does the same with all tree game.I started him on squirrels and switched him to bears.I'm thinking this is just how he is and don't know if I could fix it or did I mess up when I started him by not instilling in him he needs to stay at tree till I get there,I have a buyer for him.Don't know if I should let him go. Thanks Wayne

Re: Training help
You could work with him on treeing but should be breed into him. It sounds like he needs to go be a hog dog or somethin if he cant stay treed. I had the opposite problem once my first lil red dog would start on a track fine but then she got tired she grabbed the first tree and would tree her ass off and would call the rest to her messin thing up big time and makin my huntin buddies pissed also. So dont waste to much time lots of prospects out there and the naturals are way better to work with. just my 2 cents
Re: Training help
I wouldn't sell the dog unless the buyer knows what they are getting. If you want to work with the dog try tying him up at the tree and praise him real well. If he returns to you ignore him. You might try a caged animal so you have control of the training session but if you can get to the tree fast enough just tie him up as soon as you get there.

Re: Training help
I can't answer that because he is so far away I can't get there, lol,He has put them up before and he real gritty and I think if the bear stood and faught he would like it better so I'm hopeing he is,I guess there's alot of things that can go on at the tree.He does the same thing when he trees squirrel.I'm thinking I should stop running him alone.Anyone have an opinion on that question.
Re: Training help
not every dog in everyones bearpack is a complete dog start to finish if they were you could find one for 5 dollars most anywhere. run a strong treedog with him ,and you may have a winning combination. its about finding a balance .if he doesnt stay there with a strong treedog then i would probably let a hog hunter try him like someone else said .
