ledged up

This was kinda brought on by the tack topic and thinking of times you could have used something else. What is the worst you've ever managed to get ledged on horse back? I ve got only a couple times I let it happen yet it was enough to make me cautious in country with rock ledges. I try to never jump down one my horse can't go back up. But sometimes in new country. It happens spent four hard hours building sixty ft of trail once. Used rocks as steps coming down cause going back wasn't going to happen. Had a friend roll a horse once down a incline and getting it out was a extreme engineering trial. Only five miles straight to the road but by horse it was plenty more. Lion fever is bad stuff.

Once as a young guy,not real smart but thought I was,I rode down a trail I couldn't see to the bottom. The trail was washed out about twenty feet down and being dumb and short on knowledge, I tried to back him up the grade. Course he stepped off and fell backward to the bottom which was about ten feet. I stepped out going down and he fell on my foot,still in the stirrup with me laying between his front and back legs . I guess it knocked the wind out of him as he lay there till I worked my foot out. It didn't hurt either of us other than our pride. We both walked out down the wash a little wiser and a whole lot smarter. " Lesson learned " Don't ride down nothing you can't see to the bottom and not down nothing you can't climb back up.. I haven't forgotten and that was about 45 years ago.

Very sound advice do not go down for sure somthing you can't get back up. Going up is a little safer becasue you are making trail as you work thru it but it still might be a bugger. I have been in a lot of jams over the years but I guess they say occasionaly even a blind sow will find an acorn. I take it slower these days and I am more prone to get off tie up and go check it out rather than just barreling off into it. I know some who have hunted with me will read this and go yeah right because we do ride some terrible stuff, but if you take your time and pick your spots you can usually get there.

It's always good to keep your saddle animal in one piece, it makes for a better ride home. LOL!

Most of the time I get in a jam because of being too stubborn to turn around and go back the way I came.. I hate to backtrack...
