Collar questions

Post by Ringo »

Hey just wondering whats the reasoning everyone says the dc 30s are the way to go. I have three of them, my cousin is wanting to buy some garmin collars and I was wondering whats the main problem with the dc 40s. Any advice would be great I dont know much about the new collars or the dc 30s for that matter. Thanks

That's what this area is for, It's one area that folks can search for Garmin questions instead of having them all over the website and having to search for them.
To answer you question. (In my Opinion so I don't Piss off Some other Vendor or Person as that seams to happen quite often when talking about Garmin stuff)

On the DC40 The GPS antenna was rotated 90 degree's and placed on the bottom of the collar.

When the dog is pointed North the GPS antenna is pointed East and picking up all the eastern Satellites very well, It will not be picking up the Western satellites as well.

The worst Case is when the Dog Turns 180 degree's because now the GPS antenna is pointed West and is Blind to most of the satellites it was tracking and now most pick up the Western Satellites.

Given the Situation the DC40 Tracks very good, However the DC30 antenna is pointed Straight up to the Sky, so As the dog turns it does not change which direction the antenna is pointed as much.

I try to explain that the DC40 is impressive considering that That Change. However I prefer to have the Best possible. and by moving the DC40 it handicaps it some.

On the DC40 you must make sure the collar is linked up before placing it on a dog, I've seen several times where the DC40 does not link up while on the dog, With a DC30 I can let it link up while it's on the dog.

If you were to give an Example in real life, it would be like taking a CB antenna and instead of Putting the antenna on top of your truck, you mount it on your door. It's going to work good (damn Good) Most of the time, However you'll probably notice that it just doesn't work as well as having it on top in some situations.

So my opinion it works good.. It's Just not as Good As a DC30. I don't really care how much software Updates can do there is a Hardware problem that is handicapping them. As soon as I get some time, I'm going to Experiment with a couple Modifications and see if I can fix the issue for at least myself.. and Possibly Others. I'm waiting on Parts, and I'm waiting to see what and If there is any difference in the Updated DC40's that are due out in a couple weeks.

Well my cousins trying do get by pretty cheap, he hunts with me and I already got the astro and 3 dc 30s. Would you just buy a couple dc 40 and run them or look for the used dc 30s?

What do you guys think about the hand held antenas, are they worth owning or is it a small improvement in signal.

@ Ringo

They work good but the damn antennas break really easy. My connector also came loose, so i bought a new one at radio shack and that one came loose. so they are a pain in the ass, and I would not use them except in cases where you loose a signal with your other antenna.
