Genetics?

Post by chris1v »

I want to pic some brains with this question. We all talk about certain breeding ( bloodlines) Weems, Nabek, Pocahontas, smith ect. ( just using these names as an example). We all breed to try and get the best that suit our own needs. We try and look at genetics or certain dogs (bloodlines) to try and pick out what we want, need or to improve the type of hound we want.
My question is; How many generations back ( 2nd, 3rd, 4th, ect ) do you think that is going to make up your cross? How far back do you think the traits that we want are going to come out? ( long hair-short hair, cold nose- hot nose, sit back tree dog- on tree dog. ect).
Would you get a strong as trait to come out from 7 generations as 3 generations? What percentage of generations back do you think makes up our pedigree?
I would like to hear everyones thoughts and reasons of Why and what makes our pedigrees up?

From the names you mentioned, I am guessing you are using plotts as your measureing tool. So for them I would have to say it all depends on how tightly they are bred. I guess that could go for any breed though.

I also think that it depends on how many common characteristics the ancestors have. If there are a plethora of different dogs in the pedigree but most of them had a good to better nose you are probably going to get a good to better nose and so on. If they most of them had poor locating abilities then you will probably get dogs with poor locating abilities.

With that the more you have a certain dog, or a certain cross in a pedigree the more likely you are going to a dog closer resembling those dogs.

I believe that you will get, or should expect to get what the average of the pedigree says the dog should be. Unless you are using dogs on the extreme ends. For example if the some of the dogs have great noses and more of the other dogs have poor noses it is a crap shoot as to what you will get.

The post refers to any breed. There has to more than just Reed that has an opinion on this. We all breed.

Way back in the 60's I hunted with a fellow that had some outstanding hounds. his father had bred the strain for many years... they said that if you could get the same hound in the 3rd generation was what seemed to work as good as any.--- having fooled with hounds for a few years and done a bit of line breeding and seen inbreeding --- and also read a lot on the subject, I sure think after all those fellows were pretty right!
the same cross does not always produce the same types...

Guy Ormiston wrote a small book " New Guide to Breeding Old Fashioned Working Dogs"
( or something close to that
anyway it discusses many breeding theories.. among them is back-massing to certain sires.(or Dams)--
another thing that is a must is one must be very critical of their stock to select only the mates that do not have the same serious faults.

some look good on paper but in the woods do not work-- so you will never know until you try and then prove them in the woods.

Fellows please go back in the Archives and look for "Breeding with a purpose" and a thread on Hound Genetics. There is some very good Post with research data to back it up.

You might want to google "Brackett Hound Breeding" , "Newlin on linebreeding dogs", and "Breeding GSP" all three of these will lead you to great information from very knowledgeable and successful Dog breeders. These articles you will find in th BGH Archives!

Also go the www.foxhoundspastandpresent.com and click on Hound Breeding articles. There you will find several good bits of info, pay close attention to those by "Hop White and his son Ky White"; Hop was a common since PHd form Texas A&M who also was a Houndsman.

the old time dogmen bred their game bulldogs based on the 3rd generation. most good breeders try to match up pedigrees more than individual dogs.
