I've taken the magnent and stuck it in my back pack before to hike in and it did alright.

I don't think it does as good as on a truck due to the Ground Plane.. Most Antenna's need a ground, and your metal truck acts as a Ground plane.

It worked better than the rubber duck antenna for me, and stopped me from breaking HandHeld antenna. I would be interested to hear your experience.

Have you got it mounted on some kind of spring base so it doesn't get broke ducking under trees? Let us know how it works out.

well my experment failed . the attena stayed upright on the back pack it would bend down and pop right back in an upright position going under branches .that is the only thing that worked out . the range was no better than the stock attena that came with the garmin . i will mount the base back on the attena and try the attena on the truck and see how the range is .

Ive not tried that, but I have used the truck magnetic mount on my 4-wheeler, it saves me money on having to buy a new long range replacement every so often, just stuck magnet to the rack, get a handlebar mount to hold your unit, and my wheeler has a cigarette lighter plug in on it, so I use a charger adapter and plug the unit in, this saves the battery.
