If you can't have a gun yet then I'd get a bow. You'll learn a lot.

Henry 22LR carbine.
Tube feed holds plenty of shells, lever action's as safe as a bolt gun, fast and fun to shoot, and who doesn't like lever guns?
Henry's levers are the smoothest you'll find, very accurate, their CS is head and shoulders above all their competators, and they're US made.
Watch the sales at Cabelas and others. If you're patient you can find em around two and a quarter. Worth every penny IMO..
No I don't work for Henry, but I wouldn't mind if I did. LOL
Luck, Charlie

x2 i love my henry lever action 22lr and it was my first gun! i think i got it when i was like 8 tho but i still shoot it to this day. it has thousands and thousands of rounds through it. i probably shoot at least 2-3 thousand rounds a year through it and is still accurate. lil more dangerous then a bolt gun since it doesnt have a saftey and you must lower the hammer but i have never slipped or had an accidental discharge. i think it holds 15rds

I'm not sure I agree with that, but I dang sure won't ague with ya about anything Henry.
I love my little Henry Frontier in 22WMR. The Cats up here in Idaho don't think much of it though.

The Gophers don't much care for it either.

I suggest shooting all your buddy's guns and seeing what you like. Consider what you will use the gun for. For sure there is no reason you shouldn't be able to use any and all guns made. If you can't be trained to safely use a gun by age 17, then it ain't gonna matter what gun it is.
