Anyone Run bears Alone?

Post by logger57000 »

I just wondered if anyone out there runs bear with hounds by their self? Only one pickup and one person. Do you believe it can be done? Thanks for your response.

I use to run alone before my buddies retired . Since my stroke and Heart attack the wife won't allow it . It can be done if you really know the area and have the right equipment .just don't do anything Stupid. Never really had a problem when a bear would tree . BUT it tends to get a little crazy if you got a MEAN one BAYED up and No one to cover your back . Hard to keep eyes on Hounds ,Bear ,and get the BIG PICTURE all at the same time .

I don't do to much alone, but my boyfreind does when I'm at work. Lots of people in this area do. I'd estimate at least 40-50% of the people hunt alone a lot of the time.

Logger, Yeah I used to run by myself quite a bit when I had 3 hounds, heck did it with just two. You know all your dogs are going to get a good run that way, and its pretty rewarding to tree one when your by yourself.

Yep probly 90% of the time. It is nice to go with at least one other person that hounds to because people that hound hunt nows( loseing dogs, walking up in horable country, lookin for dogs and exetera). I have found out people without dogs don't like it as much and don't really help out as much. That's my experiance..

I would think everyone either does or did, you can't always depend on someone else to go at all times, besides you're not alone you have the dogs and after all that's the whole reason for going anyways. Mike

I think the best way to learn about hunting and more importantly learn about your dogs is going out all by your lonesome and it is much more rewarding.

I ran our dogs all the time alone. I didnt have a job at the time so I had plenty of time for the dogs. The other two a run with either had jobs or woman not letting them go out. Learned alot about the dogs and learned alot about what I could do too. Ran cats by myself to in the winter just made sure to pack for a night out if I had too, and equipment if i did get stuck.

the only thing that stinks is once you commit to going to the dogs is if they get near a busy road and your in an hour from getting to them . dogs can cover in ten minutes what will take you forever.thats what plays on my mind more than anything hunting alone .

Inchtown : Yeah I picked a good one too . The problem is we only have a 6 week season no Sunday hunting and End of Oct can be hit or miss with the weather ,If it gets cold ,Frosty and the Natural food is gone they tend to den up early some years.

I think last year there was 3 days that my son or buddies were unavailable ,so the wife went out with me ,She will pack her 357 and ride her Atv ,but will not come to the tree unless I call out to her TREED We will watch the bear , She will take a few pictures ,Gather up the hounds and we head out .It still amazes me ,I swear the hounds mind her better than Me . We have some pretty thick Brushy woods up here and handles it pretty good for a GAL.

She ain't afraid to shoot either .Pity the bear that gets in her Fruit trees or garden ,She plugged 2 in the past 5 years . Oh yeah and that Nice 12 pointer hanging on the fire place its hers she shot off the back porch 3 years ago . Some days I just can't win  so I suppose I will keep her around a little bit longer before I trade her in for a COUPLE of 30 year old BIMBO's Better wait though I might NOT be able to AFFORD THEM
