CatCrazed wrote:So do you have to have both the topo and the Sat img maps on it? Do they over lay or are they on differant pages? I'm thinking upgrade but If im forced to have the sat img i'm not sure. Do they slow down alot with all the memory used up? Thanks
You don't have to use both.Yes the topo will over lay with the BirdsEye View. I have as yet to notice mine slowing down any at all. I used it last night along with the new flexible ant that comes standard with them and never loss signal once.

Does anyone know if you need the exact power cord from garmin to operate the new 320? A buddy of mine got one and he can't get it to work with his old power cord. His old 220 works fine with it.
Is there a setting that one needs to change in the setup to get it to work?
He has been just using batteries so far but wants to get his external power situation to work.
But The system is faster and handles maps very nicely. I've been using mine with both Garmin Topo, Hunting GPS topo's and the BirdsEye on them and it is nice and easy to switch back and forth between maps.
As expected the Mapping on them is nice.
A couple Pro's that I've noticed: handles Maps better, I have 3 different map programs loaded on mine and it's a breeze to switch between them.
Faster CPU which doesn't amount to much to general apperance, but I've run some tests (Distance and such) and I could see that there would be some benifit when you have 10 dogs loaded up on it..
For example, after you come back and load the Points on the computer (which most folks don't do) You can see the difference, On the 220 it was able to grab about 1/2 or a 1/3 of the updates when I was running 2 collars, (collars were on 5 Sec) and the 320 was almost Getting all of the updates. Meaning that the 320 was able to logged twice as much data.
Now in Hunting conditions, I don't need 5 second updates, however as you added more collars (For example 10 dogs) because it has a faster CPU it keeps better track of juggling all the info that the 10 dogs are sending.. ... .Hopefully that makes Sense.
Updating the Collars are a nice improvment, you can update Collars in the Field. the Best and Probably my favorite Upgrade is that you can force an Upgrade to a Collar that doesn't respond to the 220 (Solid Red light issue) Basically it's already saved me from sending in a Collar to Garmin because I was able to fix it with the 320 where I wouldn't have been able to do so before. So that's a Big Plus to me especially since I try and help out and update many collars.
3 axis compass.. I don't normally use the Compass, but it's allot.. (ALLOT) better. You don't have to hold it level for the compass to work.
Color.. It's Orange.. So when a dumb ass like myslef drops it I have a chance at finding it..
Con's: It's not a Huge Improvment, We are always wanting more. Most Improvements were made on the GPS side of things, Not Much improvment on the Dog Tracking Side of things. LR antenna is probably better, I have yet to be impressed with any antenna that mounts on the Handheld. they do help but it' not going to blow you away like a magnet or LR handle antenna will. (but that's to be expected) None of the accessories work with it.. Including the 220 12VDC Power Cable
I'll try and write up and gather my thoughts I've just been Completely swamped the last couple weeks.
The car cable will work it just can't be an older model. Unfortunately I discovered this first hand. ONe of the testers had been using a phone cable with no issues what so ever. The problem is that the 320 goes into USB interface mode with the older cables. Not sure what other accessories you have but mine work with it. The long range antennae that Garmin is selling and also that Steve White is selling will get about an additional .5-1.5 miles for you ( under my hunting conditions).
Catcrazed, As far as the mapcard if it is a micro sd with a garmin type map loaded it should work with your unit. You do have to activate which map or all maps from the menu though.
Hope that helps some.

I'll pull one out of the Box for a 220 and give it a shot to make sure if that's what your telling me, I have 10 of them on the wall and I haven't tried a brand New 220 12VDC cable, only the one that's been in my truck for a year or so, so It very well might make a difference if they made some kind of change. But Garmin's website shows Two different Part numbers for the 220 and the 320 so I just assumed that the 220 doesn't work and you need one that is comparable with the 320.
Most folks have the one for a 220 VDC charger and when they plug it in it won't work most folks aren't going to be happy.
Nolte, Let me know if your works? I would hate to see you waste your beer money on something that you don't need...
Here are some screen shots with both the Garmin 24K Topo Maps overlaying Birdseye View, and the huntingGPSmaps overlaying on birdseye view.
Kind of excited to see Marshall's version of a gps locater, especially where Marshall is located in Salt Lake City, UT. Sceptical though, cause Garmin has made GPS units for years, Marshall has not. I do hope Buddy tries one out so we can here his input.
BK- That is funny about the training. Guess I missed out on it as well. Did get a couple of calls about issues, but that is it. No special training that is for sure.
As sorta stated. Memory should not be an issue if storing the imagry and maps to the sd card. You are given the option as to where it can be stored. So that truly is a mute issue.
I also find it funny that some are supposedly showing up. When I know there are still glitches that have yet to be resolved. Guess I must have missed another training meeting
