B.F.B

Post by dirtydan »

This is the first thing I have ever caught alone without my friend and his dogs. While walking a ridge above a waterhole we were seeing lots of sign. My friends heard rustling in the brush in the canyon below. I sent my year old walker/bluetick down to investigate. He lit the canyon up and almost just as fast we saw this fat bastard climbing a large pine tree. My young dog treed his ass off. I just bought a so called finished dog who didn't make a peep or even perk his ears up. Just a little pissed about that. After my friend Joe stuck some arrows in him and he hit the ground my young dog jumped right on in there and wooled him up. The so called finished dog took off running and sent me on a mile and a half chase to catch him. The bear is at the taxidermist and he says he will score 21 and some change. I'm not too familiar with scoring bears but he was a Big F##king Bear.

Good job the pup did for ya. and a nice bear too. I think I'd of been slinging lead at the "finished " dog, maybe you would have lucked out and hit him in the head. :D Thanks for sharing. Mike

sounds like you should retire the finished dog and perhaps quit while your on such high note. Nice bear. Who did you get the finished dog from? Guys like that should be culled as well.

Believe me the so called finished dog almost caught a bullet just so I could get my collars off of him when he was running off. A friend of mine picked the dog up and sold it to me. The agreement was he would take responsibility if the dog was no good. This is the other reason I had to catch him so I can take him back. The dog is from Pecos NM. Supposed to have been a highly decorated coon hunter that was also used on bear and lion as a lead dog. I'm pretty sure he is none of the above as we have walked out of the woods in the middle of the night by a creek loaded with fresh coon and bear sign. He showed absolutely no interest in any of it. We had six month old dogs going off on it while he just walked by it. He's also been let loose on two red hot ten minute old bear tracks here at my house. I sat here and watched the bear eat my garbage from the dumpster and then let the dog loose. He wouldn't take the track at all. Here is a picture of him. Do any of you guys from Northern NM know him or know of him. I like him as a dog and will not shoot him just cause he doesn't hunt. On the same hand I won't feed him on my tab either if he is just gonna watch my pups get whooped by bears without helping. I can't afford any more pets. I'm just curious to know if any of you know anything about him? Maybe he just won't hunt for me. He was allegedly part of some coon hunting club up there. Any of you in this club?

Lepcur, did you ever have those pups you told me about? I'm still interested in a leopard dog.

Hey Dan, They should be here in the next week or so but I have more people wanting them than I'll have pups I'm sure. Next year I'm gonna breed 2 females as I'm trying to get this strain going again in areas that it once strived but now everything there has been all crossed up over the years. Let me know later on if you might be interested. Take care, Mike

I'm from Pecos, never have seen the dog- or heard of any Pecos coon hunting club. A lot of guys run hounds in the Pecos area during season, but as far as I know only 5 or 6 guys from Pecos own hounds. If it was your buddy who bought the dog, that's a great place to start looking for additional info. That's a nice big bear, congrats!

Ethan, Thanks for the reply. Apparently the dog was picked up from an older man who was holding the dog for his son. The story goes that the son found work elsewhere and his dad kept two of his dogs with hopes he would get to come home and hunt them again. The old man got tired of caring for the dogs so they got sold. I'm not sure the deal my friend made with the man but I do know that I was smart enough to make my deal where I could bring the dog back to my friend if I didn't like him. I have my ass covered but I hate to see anyone get burned.

Lepcur, keep me in mind during some future litters.

dirtydan,

You need to snip that problem in the butt permanently...if you dont your problem will become someone elses problem...and we all don't want junk like that around being able to breed...

I agree about getting that dog out of the hunting world. If I can't find some hippy to give him a home I'll cut his nuts and "accidently" lose him on the reservation with the rest of the mutts I didn't like. Then I'm gonna find the dog jockey selling culls as hunting dogs cut his nuts off and "accidently" lose him on the reservation. I would just shoot the damn dog but I'm pretty sure he was someones pet. I bet he was lost or stolen and fell into the hands of some dog jockey looking to make a buck. He has perfect kennel manners and is good with other dogs. He even enjoys being in the woods but doesn't know wtf is going on. For some reason I just can't bring myself to shoot him. He deserves to be re homed as a pet like I believe he always was. I'm not buying the stories that come with him as I believe he had never hunted a day in his life until I got him. I can promise you guys one thing, this dog will never be sold as a hunting dog again nor will he remain entact to breed. We don't need his non hunting genes on this mountain.

what the hell is wrong with you. ain't much that pisses me off, but "losing a dog in the res". I know other guys like you that don't have the guts to take care of a problem, just drop them off in the brush. When you own hounds, you need to be able to take care of problem dogs, period.

By the way, hell of a nice bear there. congrats

Actually the man who got me the dog took him back and we squared up on the money so he is no longer my dog to shoot or lose. Great for me cause honestly I'm not experienced enough to make the final call. At least this way an experienced houndsmen can confirm he needs to go. Thanks for the congrats it was really a blessing for me and my dog to get so lucky.
