DO NOT KNOW IF I SHOULD QUIT HUNTING OR NOT

Postby MUD AND BLOOD » Tue Mar 08, 2011 6:19 pm

I am aggrevated because there are hogs in my area but land owners do not want you to run dogs on the land. In my county, there are hogs but no one hunts them with dogs. There are so few hog hunters in South Carolina I cant find anyone who has dogs or wants to hunt. I had a place to hunt but the guy only has 150 acres and surrounding land owners wont let you get your dogs if they go onto their property. Really thinking about just giving it up, but I dont want to. How did any of you who are not land owners find a place to hunt?

Alot of knocking on doors is how I got my places to hunt, then word of mouth from the landowners of the good job me and my dogs do got me more. It took almost a year to get my own place to hunt, which makes you respect the place you do have more.

good public relations go a long way. in certain areas hound hunters have a poor reputation and ell behaved dogs and a presentably appearance and respectful attitude help erase that. try to interact with the landowners in other venues to help build a relationship that can follow through to hunting access. everyone needs something perhaps trade labor or skills for hunting access.

try advertising in a local news paper or store pinup boards maybe. hogs arent an animal that alot of people want around you just have to get in touch with those people .

for the time being since you have a small property, consider changing the style of dog you run. some sort of bull or mastiffXsighthound (grey or stag hound etc) would be ideal and they can be found on baydog from time to time. teach them to heel and slip them on hogs at bait sites they should be able to pull up the hog within 100-200 yds. great danes, irish wolfhounds & scottish deerhounds can be used the same way if you can find the ones that want to do it. the wolfhounds & danes may start scent trailing on their own though so be careful. also if they run a track all of these breeds run silent and the neighbors won't know they are running until the catch.

check your state dog laws there should be a" Right to retrieve" clause in the hunting with hounds section. You should have that right maybe without a gun though

Hang in there man ! Here in the south their is so many owners because most of the land is broken into small acreage's. But as the hog population rise's they will start calling you for help! I would just start out with short range, catchy style dogs they are easier to keep on small parcells.

I know how it is I've coon hunted for over 20 yrs. And the first time I went hog hunting it was all I wanted to do got rid of my coondogs and got a pack of half cur half hound and was going every day I could at first we had a lot of places to go and caught a lot of hogs but little by little as the land owners saw no sign of hogs they would say I sure do appreciate what you did for me and that they would call us if they saw ant more sign we are people of good standing in the communities but what we wouldf do after a hunt was ride around and look for people with a lot of pasture and visiable sign in the field are people with big tracks of land and hit them up it helps if you have a young one with you as they are less likely to tell you no with a child . I was lucky when I started out with two ole boys that had been doing it for years but about 2 years into it my buddies moved and I started looking for people to go with and a lot found out quick that hog hunting was a mans sport . Add all that and the fact that when I started we would not catch hogs every time but caught enough for 4 families to never run out and now you may run a hog all day putting fresh dogs on it all thru the day you might catch. It you may not I went back to coon hunting. There is a guy around here that offers a service he calls ridahog he will go on your land and set up traps and run and catch hogs for free that's how's he gets places to run his dogs. Wish I lived closer I sure would go with you.

I went nocturnal along time ago. 1am to 5am. Don't use a light until you have to. If that don't work move to another state where people are more friendly to dog hunters.

As the hog population grows they will start having a change of heart ! But when you first start gaining permission on small tracts it is best to have straight catchy style dogs. You will need to show some caught hogs and not just running some across several peoples land. I would suggest some Curs, bull crosses, and straight bulls cause you want need anything with a lot of range and/or bottom for these small tracts. That will come later after making a good impression and getting several places to hunt.

I dont think he's saying he sneaks onto private property. I think what he is saying is, it is much easier retrieving your dogs, after dark, if they get on private property. I too do most of my hunting after dark for the same reason. Your also more likely to be the only one in the woods in the area. Nice and quiet too.
