Ol Dan

Post by Brent Sinclair »

It's a tough day when you loose an old vetran in your pack...
I'll have to go back and try to count the number of lion and bear he stood under, he was a great hound and a travlin companion of many years...
Ol Dan at 14 treeing a lion for the Castle Carbondale Cougar Project in March 2011, he saw his last lion just a week or so before we had to put him down, Wendy and I were running the hounds and a big tom was crossing the road a mile from the kennels, It went into a culvert and I threw some rocks in to push it out, the hounds were in the box going crazy watching the lion less than 30 yards in front of them run across the open field.
He was on his last kill 2 weeks earlier with this 70 lb sub adult tom that jumped on a small girl, I took the ol fella up with a couple of his young dogs to catch it.
It'll be a different year comming up not having him to run...

It sure does, but when you can run a hound for nearly 14 years of his life till the last couple weeks ......that is pretty special...
You know it is just a matter of time at that age, I hate hearin of those great hounds getting killed by wolves a lion ,bear or some accident at a young age in their prime.
That has to be tough.
You just get to attached to an ol vetran after so many years of hunting together and watching his grandsons and daughters mature into fine lion hounds....

Brent, Ol Dan sounds like one special hound i wish I could have spent a moment under a tree with him, he must have something else. One day we will have try and meet under a tree . I would like to hear some of Ol Dans tales first hand.

Very sorry to hear about your loss. It is tough to loose a close hunting companion like your Ol Dan dog. Glad to hear he was able to get out and hunt right to the end. Good luck hunting. Rory

Keep your chin up Brent,

I lost my old Blaze dog last bear season too,he just never came back from the tree with us.We looked for days but we never found him,I think he just took a nap someplace after all the fun and never woke up.
Don't imagine the marks he left on me in his 15 years will ever fade,he made me a houndsman, imagine Dan did the same for you.

Thanks Guys

We all go through it and it's a fact of life and raising hounds.
Makes it a bit tougher when it's one that taught your son how to hunt lions...
This is one of my favorite photo's of Ol Dan and his pup Sam.

Mike Leonard told me get ready.... we're all going to be there one day chasin the biggest lion we've ever found with those hounds we've lost..hope he's right!!!!

Well Brent I am glad I had privelege of being under a few trees with you and Dan. He was a fine hound and has left you with countless memories and also few of his offspring to keep his flame going. They will keep you going also.
Sorry for loss.

Seems like yesterday I got to his first tree...... not far from where we got that lion the day we met up on the road... he was just 8 months old keepin a small female up a pine feeling like he had the world by the tail...
That flames going pretty good the last week..... I have 16 new memories of him in two kennels...so looks like you may be in for an early Christmas present!!!!!!!

Did you find a ram?

The female hasn't hardly moved since we collared her, I got her signal last week within 1/2 a mile of this spot...
I forgot to ask you that day, were you awake that morning when you grabbed your gear for the capture???

Sorry about ol dan. them are some fine looking dogs though.Gotta love them black and tans. my grandpa told me once that you had knew you had lived a good life if you had a good woman,a good horse, a true friend ,and a good hound. So consider yourself lucky because it sounds to me like you had two out of the four in ol dan. you cant replace dogs like that. they may leave you good offspring but i doubt that you will ever have the same relationship with another dog like the one you and ol dan shared with one another.
