Hey guys,
My two young boys and I was going down to the creek tonight behind our house to gather wild pears falling from a few trees to put out on a few Deer food plots and the boys wanted to take there 6month old hounds for some excercise so I agreed and took our 18month walker dog and our old black & tan female dog as well, we was filling 5gal buckets with pears when one of the pups went to pulling on the lead and opening up facing the south wind, I looked over the hill "given it is still daylight" and could see a big ole' Coon running along the pond, I told the boys this couldnt get any better we got all the dogs over there and they all opened and we turned them loose, the race was on. When the Coon saw the dogs he headed for thick timber, i told my boys this was gonna be great, there young pups was gonna get to see the real deal and watch the older dogs run that Coon right up a tree.......Well that is not what happend. We could see the dogs right on the coons tail all 4 of them and the Coon stopped and was ready to fight, I mean trees and brush piles everywhere and this coon didnt want to climb no tree, the walker and black dog tore into him and the fight was on, my gosh it lasted forever, my Walker has caught and killed many coon but never one this large or mean, Coon had to be 25lbs or better, anyway the pups stayed in there and never quit bawling and even got a few bites in, after about 30 minutes the walker collapsed and the coon made it into a brush pile and everything was silent, I had a bucket of water in the truck so we watered the dogs and loaded up, I tell ya my walker is tore up, he was so exhausted it was horrible, now I know I should have done something but it was kinda hard my boys are just 5 and 7 so I stayed close to them and was trying to keep the pups from getting tore up and there wasnt much I could do...We gave some shots of PEN to the walker and the others were ok, My boys loved it. Has anyone else ever had a bad Coon like this that would not tree??? I mean after a while the dogs were just baying him and he had plenty of chances to run up a tree, but would not! So lets hear some War stories.
Thanks for yalls time...

Re: Down and Dirty Coon fight!!!
I have had a few that would stand and fight for A minute untill they figured out what they were in for. Bigger coon of course like you mentioned 20 to 25 lbs. Alot of times when im starting pups and tree one or they catch em on the ground ill hold the older ones back and let the young dogs run it again and catch it and they sometimes turn and fight i let it go on for a few minutes then cut some older dogs into help them. Sounds like you had a good time and the boys are probably hooked id imagine. Good luck with the pups sounds like they are on the right track kepp em goign take care and good luck. DC

Re: Down and Dirty Coon fight!!!
happens once in awhile around here. some bigger coons will try and hide in the wild rose bush thickets. when the dogs grab them, if there lucky enuf to getaway they more than likely tree. we get a few that are hard headed and want to fight, thats when big old buddy my 96 pound black dog comes in handy. he loves fighting big coons in thick bush. the fight only last about a minute if that with him. my smaller hounds have more of a problem finishing the job though. i always try and help them out so they dont get hurt, but sometimes they are in such thick stuff i physically can't get into them in time to help out.
have fun and stay safe.
