Dog Killer

Postby broncobilly » Sun Oct 02, 2011 4:28 am

For the first time in over 20 years of running hogs with dogs, and over 4000 hogs caught, I had a dog killed by a hog today. I knew if I hunted long enough it would happen someday, but I still wasn't really prepared for it. The hog in the pic is the one that did it. He killed one good dog and sent two more to the vet that will be on injured reserve for at least a month, if they live. For reference the kid in the pic is 6ft 1inch tall.

It seems like this fall I can't find anything but big, bad boars. The smallest I have caught this fall was 180 live wt, and have caught 2 that weighed 275 field dressed.

Bill, I'm sorry to hear that, but glad you all got him.
Is that the walker cross in the picture?

Thanks guys,

The dog I lost was a catahoula gyp around 2.5 years old. She was not a once in a lifetime dog or any thing like that but she was a very solid young dog that would go find her own hog and stop him by herself. I still have her mother, who is a very solid lead dog, two of her littermate sisters that are not quite as good as she was, but also have a little less experience, and an uncle that could also be a lead dog except that he is still a little gunshy.

John, Yes, that is Johndog, the walker/GGS cross in the pic, this is the second sure enough bad hog he has been on and he did very well on both. I had Babe along on this hunt, but that hog was not a good one for training a young catchdog on so I did not turn her loose.

The mare is going to turn out all right eventually, but, like you warned me, someone mistreated her badly sometime in the past, they taught her to buck when scared or uncomfortable, and she is pretty good at it, but with a little time and training she will come around and be a very good horse. She wants to be gentle and she wants to please, but she was scared and hurt so bad by that guy that mistreated her that it is a little hard for her right now. She has made some good progress already and I am certainly still glad to have her.

That dog was a sister to this one, I still have her and she is one of the dogs that was sent to the vet as a result of this same hog. Here is another pic of the same hog on a wheeler before we hung him up and a pic of a good sized spotted hog.

halfbreed,

I spent a lot of money pumping the water for that hog to have a mudball, he had been living in an irrigated field. I hope you have been getting some of the moisture the weather channel has been predicting for Tx, maybe if all of Tx got 10 inches or so then we could have a half inch.

Ron,

I got it a few minutes ago, thanks for the info. Unfortunately I am not in a position to be able to get any more right now, but I appreciate your thinking of me.

Did you ever get your dog bred, and have you been running the hogs down there.

No I haven't bill. I been trying to catch her in heat, and while I was out Bow hunting Elk my friend who was feeding for me said she had been in. That's just how my luck runs, but to tell the truth I'm a little leary to raise a litter and get stuck with a bunch of pups that I can't even sell for enough to pay my feed bill. Know what I mean, people just are not spending money on hobbies anymore. I guess the price groceries and fuel will end up breaking the back bone of the Nation. I've got several well bred Quarter horses for sale, some colts, some broke, and one that you can do just about whatever that can be done a horse back on, and can't sell em. The only people making money are those with hay!! lol

Anyway I saw those pups last night and they are real nice. If you know anybody interested 4 males and 4 females left. Mostly red leopards had all shots and are well socialized. NALC reg. Ron
