TWO Bobcat Questions
TWO Bobcat Questions
OK so I have 2 Questions... 1st.. What is better for shooting a bobcat a 22 Mag or a 410. I have been thinking of getting a 410 rifle but I have a good 22 mag pistol that I know works, I just want a new toy. So how dose a 410 affect the hide on a bob cat. My other question is that I have two good dogs that can tree coons and farel cats I just have been having a hell of a time treeing a bob cat. I know that the more I go out and the more exposer to the cat the better my chances are I just want to speed up the process. Any advise other then going out with someone with good dogs...HELP...... Thanks ZAC

Re: TWO Bobcat Questions
Stick with the 22 mag or just a 22 thats all i have ever used and does the job real well with hides being high you sure dont want to take a chance on ruining one. Also about the dogs time will tell if they will make the grade some dogs just catch a few cats from time to time and some do it consistantly. I have seen alot of nice coon dogs just be coon dogs and never make bobcat dogs. Keep tryin its better than sittin on the couch. Andy

I like the 22mag. A rifle works best but I've used the pistol alot also. Bobs can be pretty high so a finer sight than is normally on most handguns helps, so does a little uphill practice.

Re: TWO Bobcat Questions
I agree with Robin on the 22 mag rifle although i have taken nearly all my cats with a 22 LR colt woodsman pistol. We don't have trees as tall as ya'll have in the Pacific Northwest and a bob even in the top of a western Ponderosa Pine or a Spruce is still within pistol popping distance. Some of those giant trees out there I might opt for my 22 Hornet and K-6 scope. LOL!
410 shotgun will frustrate you and you will have a shot up pelt too boot when you finally get him blasted out of the tree.
Bobcats are easy to kill but you have to be able to get the pill into the right spot. I would say a nice little stainless 10/22 rifle with a good clear 3x9 scope on it would make you look like a hero most of the time.

Stick with the 22 of some sort, surely don't need to be shooting bobs out of a tree with 410, just to many holes that might loose you money.

Re: TWO Bobcat Questions
Ive got a few guns i like for cats, all 22 mags. The best for packin in mountains or rough terrain, is a single six with a 4x scope. It will reach up in a fairly tall tree. One word of caution about a 22 mag pistol, it is not a good choice for introducing young dogs to to gunfire! Stick with the 22 long rifle for that.
Re: TWO Bobcat Questions
I can't add anything constructive here. But I own rifles and revolvers in both calibers and really prefer the mag in all ways. Except cartridge price. Shotguns are iffy around hounds unless its firing slugs or sabot. I'm always concerned about those flyers that just may clip a hound. I'm a staunch supporter of shotguns for many things but not cats. But go ahead and by the 410 anyway no reason not to. You can always find a use for it latter.
