Lost a good dog last night
Seriously bummed right now. Took my two lead dogs out coon hunting last night. Pretty warm out and ran through several deer. Saw quite a bit of old and fresher coon sign, but no strikes. I was only going to hunt until about 1030 since I had to go to work today. I heard old Bo let out a pretty loud yelp. I called out to him but he didn't come in right away. The Garmin showed he was still moving, so I wasn't too worried about him. About 15 minutes later he comes in staggering and falls down. I get over to him and the whole right side of his head is enormous. His nostrils were so swelled up I don't think he could breath through them. I had to take the collars off of him so his airway was open. He couldn't walk, so I started carrying him back to the truck, but he died about halfway back. Pretty sure he ran into a rattler. Looked like it caught him right below his eye. He was 7, right in his prime.

Re: Lost a good dog last night
I am sure sorry to hear about your hound. Seems like it is always our best or most prospective dog that gets killed or hurt. I have had few hounds snake-bit through the years, but have never lost one that way. My prayer is that your season is not hampered too badly from this loss and your other hounds grow in momentum. The weather seems to be breaking a little here and as soon as there is a little moisture on these fox tails I'm gonna cast these renegades of mine. Good hunting my friend!

Yeah she did. I took her to the vet after a day or so. Her face was as big as a bowling ball and she got really lethargic. They gave her an IV and drugs and she pulled through.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck but trust me, I know how you feel as I lost a great 2 yr. old hound to a rattler last week and had another struck in the nose last Tues. She will be fine but gosh I hate to loose an outstanding dog and know you do as well.
Adios,
Gary

Fred
Just spoke with Bob Norris today and he told me about your dog dying. I guess i've been lucky over the years expecially coming from the South where there are so many venimus snakes.
Hope to see you at the hunt Oct 7&8th.

There are Vaccines for Rattlers and they will help save your dogs life.
You can also snake break your dog as bird hunters do, but the vaccine is you best bet.
