Have the pups had a chance to settle in and acclimate to the new surroundings? They likely had never been off the farm before.
What kind of scent was on the drags? I have a very reliable hound that totally ignores any of commercial training scents that I have tried. These pups may have been started on the real thing.

We have a pup from that litter that shows a great deal of promise. She is a bit shy around strangers but is quite devoted to and protective of one member of the family (my wife). She has helped stretch out a couple of coons and displays a distinct preference for trailing cats so you could probably say she is started, but it would take a full season of hunting before I would begin to try to judge her on her abilities.

My old broke dogs and young dogs will not trail scent. Scent drags has very little to do with what a dog will run. To me it is almost a waste of time and teach little good working a dog on drags. That has nothing to do with them being culls or not that is up to you as the hunter to find out. Dewey

I can't speak for the cur dog part of those pups but I know the Black and Tan part came from a houndsmen that has been running hounds for 40 years. Have you tried to show them some live coon?

I wouldn't give up yet, as with most things patients is the key. alot of dogs wont pay any attention to store bought scent. you said you wanted to hunt so take them hunting that's better for them that running drags anyway

I just got a phone message from sdakotatough, who I sold a couple pups to last friday, October 14. I answered his ad that said he was looking for a pup or two to run coons and bobcats with. I told him that I had a couple "started" pups that I would sell pretty reasonable to a good home. I told him that I hadn't messed with them much for the past month or so but that I had them both on several coons, housecats and a couple bobcats last winter. I told him that they were still kind of trashy and that they needed hunted. I thought that he understood they were only started pups, not finished. The message that I got was from this weekend after he took them hunting, he said that they would not track a coon and were junk dogs. Then he proceeded to call me a liar and a crook. I don't claim to be a big shot trainer or God's gift to hound hunting, and I'm no liar. If this guy wanted finished dogs, all he would have had to do was go to the classified forum and buy some. I've sold several pups out of the same litter to a couple guys on this site and they'll vouch for me that the dogs show lots of potential for 10 month old pups. Everybody that hunts with me knows that my dogs catch their fair share of fur. I'm not going to sit here and let somebody smear my name by calling me a liar and a crook just because they don't have the patience or know-how to deal with a couple new pups. If this guy wants to call me names, he can do so to my face, my address is in the phone book and I'm not too hard to find. If he takes the time to read some of your comments and understands what it takes to train them, I think he'll end up with a couple good hounds.

It's not gonna go to the cage, cause I'm not going to get into a war of words with an internet tough guy.
