Bobcat hunt question

Just looking for some suggestions on a good state to go on a bobcat hunt in?

I live in Wisconsin and run them throughout the winter but I sure would like to actually shoot one in front of my young dogs. I have had tags in the past but was a little green yet and didn't connect and now I am on year 5 of waiting and expect another 2-3 years of a wait, oh joy oh joy.


Anyways, just seeing what people think on states? Just looking for a fun winter trip (preferably somewhat cheap, haha) where I could run some cats and maybe harvest one.

Im not sure on non residents fur takers prices in oregon. But its just a mail in and you get tags. Eastern side limit is 5 and western is unlimited tags just buy another record card. As for locations excat just dont let me catch ya in my spot. Lol i think montana has easy tags too but i dont know for sure.

Non residents cannot take a bobcat in Nevada either but in Idaho all you need is a hunting license. Sounds like S.D. might be economical for a guy from WI but I don't know the rule there.

Oh yeah, In Idaho you either have to draw a non res hound permit or hunt with an outfitter, application time for drawing a permit is this month I believe, if looking for an outfitter I can point you in the right direction.

all u need in colorado is a furbearer permit that u can buy over the counter and then have at it no limit and plenty to go around if u can catch them

Thanks everyone for all the tips. I would love to hunt Oregon, beautiful country but yea that dang "economical" thing comes into play there haha.


Colorado would be fun; I've heard out west lots of bobcats run into the rocks? I'm assuming there are good areas out there where you can tree 'em or at least have good runs too?


Anyone ever hunt Sdak for cats, wondering what that would be like.

MI is out because you're non-res but MN all you need is a small game and furbearers license which is about $250. It's a short season like ours used to be but you can get 5 cats. Quite a few wolves in areas but it's really no different than WI. I don't know how many guys and areas and such, but it can't be any worse than WI. There are fairly big sections but if you bring a sled I'm sure you can cut them down.

yep u heard right down here in southwestern colorado there is plenty of area and with a fresh snow u could probably average runnin three or four different cats a day but they head for the rocks every time and they r pretty hard to catch consistently but the license only costs $66 for non residents and the season runs from dec.1 to the end of february. PS nice bear

Was thinking of Minn too Nolte. Like ya say, the wolves make me a little nervous, but where is it safe to run anymore.



And Muzzy, the price sure is right for a tag in CO, might make the drive worth it, know its beautiful country out there. Thanks on the bear.

Hounder, you can only take Two cats in Michigan. there are wolves everywhere in the U.P. just stay away from the baraga plains wolves, those seem to be the wolves that have been killing most dogs in the U.P. I'm sorry if i'm wrong on that statement. I know somewhere around bergland there was some problem wolves but I believe they were moved to the baraga plains and are the same problem pack. I guess It depends what part of Wisc you live in, whether its a shorter drive to MI or Minn. I wouldnt sweat the Wolves, there are a lot of hunters that run all arcoss the U.P. and if your willing to run in Wisc you shouldnt have any problem running here. Because I think the Wolves are worse there than they are here in Mi JMO.

When you say take a cat in front of your dogs do you mean shoot it on the ground during the race ? As far as accessable state to hunt hard to beat MN. for a shot drive, affordable, and decent cat population. I found the hunts there fun but not as big of cats.
A sugestion... train or find a dog that will TREE a cat and run your dogs one at a time with it.

Thanks for the info bearhunter. The UP would be close and fun, would love to hunt up there but ya that dang non-resident rule gets me, oh well.


Baydogg, Minnesota is looking like it for me, thanks. Just have to start doing some research on areas up there. And by shooting I mean, tree or ground. I've had friends with tags shoot cats in front of my dogs both tree and ground, just haven't done it myself, was just too young and dumb my last tag. Now I'm just dumb so hopefully should have a little more luck . And the way bobcat tags are going in Wisconsin, I will be old and dumb for my next one so I gotta get crackin' somewhere .
