how tough is a bobcat ? !!!!!!!!!

Over the years I have caught a number of coyotes on the ground (I even had my dogs kill and eat one once before I found them) and have never had them fail to kill one unless it was a lone dog and I got there fairly quickly. (yes I consider them trash but sometimes I have trashy dogs.) I have caught lots of bobcats on the ground on the coast, here 95% of them will tree, where I used to hunt on the coast in some areas you would catch 95% on the ground. I don't know that a bobcat is harder to kill than a coyote unless it is in a hole,culvert or beaver pond, but I garuantee that on average they will do a lot more damage to your dogs in the process. If the dogs have the wind puched out of the cat and catch out where they can get ahold of it a lot of times they don't have much fight left in them, but if they get in a creek, usually where they catch them, or a briar patch, or brush pile it can be a whole 'nuther story. And a couple of times I have got after big toms that didn't want to run. And I'll take a 75-80lb bear over a 30+ lb bobcat that is fresh and not tired from running any day. Yes a good aggressive pack of cat dogs will kill it a lot easier, but I'll have a lot more dogs to stitch up and be laid up from infections.

I'm just a dang ole coon hunter, but have got two bobcats off my dogs. The first one they put in a hole and right as we were walkin out my blue dog came out with it on his head!!! There were two dogs my bluetick and my buddies walker, and that cat put a pretty good wooping on em both. One of em finally broke it down it was paralyzed i had to shoot it, it could only bite em couln'd use it's legs but was still latching on until I eased it's pain. We weighed it and it was only 12lbs8oz!!...... from what i hear thats small for a cat, but every one I've ever seen here in southeast Tennessee was about that size. The second one I got off my dogs was two years later was hunting my two blue's and every time I would get almost to the tree they would break. I thought it was a bear but never heard no limbs a cracking. I finally made it in there and looked up and seen that cat and new from the last fight that I wanted it dead when it hit the ground!! Never had a run in with any coyote's with my dogs but I'll say that a bobcat pound for pound is one mean lil fighter.

got thinking about this topic after the winter I had and this thread from last fall came to mind. Anyone catch any cats that changed their view? I just think this is a great topic and find it very interesting where people are from.

my name is nelson cole and my web page is www.ihunt4u.net -- i don't want to come across as a bragget or a bonified buls::t artist but i agree that a 25lb. bobcat is eaeier to kill than a 25 lb.coon-- i had a dog named rough ( he was laid to rest last dec) that i killed 154 bobcats with for clients, out of 154 bobcats, 26 were treed and 7 were shot running ahead of him and the rest, 121 were caught and bayed and the hunter was able to walk up and shoot them with a 22 pistol and some with a bow.-- after 2 bear seasons and the 3rd cat season he ran a cat so hard and fast that the cat would become exusted and he would kill them, this wouldn't make the hunter very happy, the only good thing was he would allways stay and bay the dead cat. -- rough was all so an a one rig dog for bear.-- the thickets that these bear and bobcat bay up in are so thick that when you fall down, you won't hit the ground-- if you don't belive me, bring your dogs and come up to maine. -- i read some post where some hunters run 10--15 dogs on a cat , when i have a hunter for a one day hunt i usually take 1 dog and sometimes 2, and after reading some of these post, i realize just how sorry my dogs are, but i do make my living with them.-- iof you want to talk dogs, my number is 207-948-3201-- thank you, nelson

Well fellows I want to put my two cents worth in there to. I think a bob is the badest animal in my part of the country, south alabama. We dont have bears, lions, but we have bobs and coyotes. I know a lot of trappers and I have never had one yet tell me he has gone to a trap and find a bobcat killed in his trap from another animal. He has found fox, coon, possum, and housecats, half eat but never one bob has been killed or bothered. Now that is a cat that the dogs have not sucked the wind out of. Im not bragging, but I got some dogs after they have run the starch out of him they can kill him and make it look easy. Two of my best kill dogs are one gyp weighs about 40lb and a male that weighs about 70lb. Im sure it matters if they can get to him or not but all in all a cat that has been caught on the ground in my neck of the woods the reason you catch him is you have ran the wind and strength out of him there is no fight left.But I think there is something we can all agree on. When a dog gets bit you better give him a shot or you will certainly have some infectious area to deal with. Good hunting Robert
