If there are no lions, bears, or bobcats in my area, how do you train dogs to pursue those animals? I live in Ohio and there are obviously no Lions and not that many bears and bobcats.
But I definitly want to not only coon hunt with dogs but go and pursue atleast bears and hopefully lions and bobcats at some point. Is this just to ambitious of a dream? Are there many states that do allow out of staters to run hounds on big game (Just recently read the Idaho thread).
Thanks for putting up with a rookie!

i hunt lions and bobs with my hounds but when they are pups and learning to hunt i use live trapped coons too teach them to trail and tree once they trail and tree the coons on their own they know everything they need to know to trail and tree lions it is just a matter of switching them over to the lion. just go to a state that allows non resident hunters find a hot lion track put the dog on it i would bet he would take it right off but if he doesnt walk it out with him untill he takes the track. utah allows non res wyo az nevada u you just by a nonres lion permit.

don`t do that you might will almost ruinet em for later-on training on big game/trust me on that. stop that ol mess ok its not i repeat NOT a good tool an it short circutes a hounds ability too run a cat down /the dog doesn`t get the true real picture an lears-it wrong from your useing house cats caged or wild housecats ever. Any notable cat hunter will explain that one 2 you/less that person never experienced it 4 hisself. Marty Ison of Corsegold ca. explained it 2 me and how it allmost ruient my 2 Plott pups he ended up with. I had them on over 200 wild housecat riverbottem ranch races an tree up/they showd caught or treedup cat 99 % of the time by age II months of age by my training. I couldnt gu up in the mtns cat hunten yet my folks said no and I chose wild h.cats in the riverbottems. Cecil Pepper/ known as jack
