Beaver Job

So I get a call from a farmer out in the scabrock country about some beaver daming up Rock Creek near Edwall. The creek is about 4 feet wide and 2 feet deep in most places. They have a series of small little dams, I counted 6 in a 500 yards stretch. And finally found the main dam.



I applied for and got issued a nusiance permit for the banned traps. Went out and set three sets and had two beaver the first morning. Killed both of them so quick they didn't even move the conibears off the stabilizers. Next morning I had a third hog. The first beaver was just shy of 60 pounds, had super nice fur. The second beaver was average beaver of 36 pounds and looks like a dwarf next to the big boy. The third beaver had the biggest dang tail I have ever seen. I wear a size 10, look how big this beaver is. He wasn't as heavy as the big boy but he was just as big. I tore a big hole in the dam and so far it has not been repaired. I think I have them all taken care of....at least for now.

I cannot see the images for some reason, but congratulations on a job well done. Beaver trapping can be as hard work as a guy ever did.

Do they allow snares for you guys? Beaver are the easiest thing ever to snare. I mean, elementary school easy. They dont really fight the snare that hard, although might busy themselves clearing the area. They dont really seem in pain and will probably be asleep like a dog on a leash when you arrive. Only problem is, fur buyers do not like the snared skins. But for control work they sure make it easy.

Nope, no snares, even the conibears I was using require a application and special permit for each job.

SWH, why do you say we can't trap any more here in CO. ? It is still perfectly legal to trap. Amendment 14 only shut off trapping on public ground using leghold and conibear. All you need to do is get a permit and you can still use steel traps on private. Or, you can still use cage traps on public. Join the Colorado Trappers Association and come to our Fur Auction next Feb. You'll see thousands of critters for sale that were all caught here in CO.
