My female hound

Post by duxtoyz »

hey everyone, question.........so i have a female black and tan/walker hound that is 16 months old and has gone into heat twice since i got her, but after her first heat she got a yellow discharge from her hoo-ha. so i took her to the vet and they said she had a uterin infection and she needed emergancy surgery.....$1150. so much for a free dog.....so i asked if there was any other option and they told me i could try antibiotics..........$58. so i opted that route, and they worked.......but now after her second heat, she has the discharge again, ive been giving her amoxocilin and it doesnt seem to be getting worse, she doesnt act different or seem like shes in pain when i touch her belly. so my question is, has anyone else had this same scenario happen to them with any of their dogs, and what did they do? i wanna breed her with my buddies walker one time, then il get her fixed. good/bad idea? thanks to anyone who can help.

Bad idea. Get her fixed. Why take a chance? Hounds aren't going extinct. If she's a good dog, do the right thing.

If it is a Pyometra (Uterine infection) it's a little more difficult than a spay. Google pictures of a canine Pyometra and you will see the difference. Those things(uterus) can get HUGE and if it pops............hell it's bad news.
In my humble opinion: This sounds like a Pyometra but it doesn't sound like your dog feels ill. Usually these dogs are tired, don't wanna eat and just plain look and act bad BUT each dog is different. I would NOT recommend breeding her. Whether it's a Pyometra or not something is not right with her reproductive tract and it needs to come out. Also, Amoxicillin is CRAP in my opinion. There is a reason Amoxicillin is 4 bucks at Wal-Mart and Target and that's because it's cheap.
Long story short, get her spayed and get another bitch with a healthy reproductive tract, it'll be worth it. Good luck!

Just a little point of view from someone who just had their female spayed....My female hound got knocked up by my cow dog so I let her go out of heat and then had her spayed. It cost less than $200 for the spay, wormer, annual shots and rabies booster. You my friend need to find a new vet.

I would recommend getting her spayed if she is having any reproductive tract issues. There are lots of people out there who raise pups for a living and do a very good job of it. I tried raising pups and learned that it should be left to the people who have the time and resorces to do it properly. As was said earlier, hounds are in no danger of going extinct.

so this hound i have hasnt been a strike dog before or she just hasnt come out of her shell til now. shes always been the 'dopey' kid on the block when shes out hunting. just running with the other dogs and smelling random stuff. even when another dog strikes she just follows not knowing what shes doing. she is only almost 2, but lately ive been taking her and the 5 month old walker pup i aquired out and she has been striking on trees in the middle of the day. and is very adiment about the trees she hits on too. jumping up the trunks, baying long and hard with sum chops and not leaving the tree when i tell her to leave it even when i dont see anything in it. she may even have a cold nose by the way shes striking during the day. shes been hitting nothin but cedars too. she seems like shel work out great. and shes not a trashing dog, ive been on deer with her and shes does nothing, not like deer live in trees, just showing shes trying with the whole treeing thing. i hope she continues to improve and show what she can do. the walker pup was even trying, she was very interested.........heres to improvement.
