Marvin Glenn real or Hollywood?
Marvin Glenn real or Hollywood?
Caught an old 50ish short flick yesterday, The gist of the show was a rancher/lion hunter saving a navajo boys sheep herd from a marauding lion,
The footage of the hounds and the footage of them( his son was helping) roping that lion down from that tree looked too dang real to be faked, lion even nailed him in the cheek during the ruckus, was wondering if that Marvin guy was a real lion hunter or a made up character?
What a rodeo! His son had a time getting that short tie on those legs,
Poked a stick in its mouth to give it something to chomp on loaded it up on that pony's back and rode off to save the day,
That cat was fussing around on that horses back and that horse acted like it could care less, Guy had a passel of dogs all kinds and colors.
Anyway don't know if he was real but sure was cool to watch whomever did the deed.
Take care Ken

What was the show sound like a good watch

Re: Marvin Glenn real or Hollywood?
Looked on the Internet a bit, from what I see he was the Father of Warner Glenn, The flick was called Desert Killer.
Looks like it was a Disney production 1952, So the footage was real and he is (or rather was a real lion hunter/rancher)
If you get a chance to view it I hope you enjoy it as I did.
The narrative is corny as all Disney circa 50s flicks are, but on the other hand its a good blast back to the past. surprised that short film hasn't been banned yet!
Hmm so that means his son in the show was Warner Glenn at a young age
neat find, didn't know it was out there,
Good hunting Ken

Re: Marvin Glenn real or Hollywood?
Very much the real deal as much so as the Lee Brothers.
Re: Marvin Glenn real or Hollywood?
When tying a lion alive, the reason for the stick in the mouth is to keep an open airway. Lions are wimps when it comes to air. They will croak in just a few seconds when they don't have air.
Marvin Glenn was the real deal, just as his son Warner, and Warner's daughter Kelly are.

Re: Marvin Glenn real or Hollywood?
Marvin was for the real deal and as Dale Lee said about the best dry ground lion hunter that ever lived. Marvin was a fine man and a gentemen. His part in the ( Wetback Hound) that Walt Disney produced was a turning point in Marvin's hound hunting and he went from runing mostly mixed up grade hound to runing primarily Registered Treeing Walkers. Marvin tried to buy the Walker pup that was in the movie but he could not so he set on a mission to find some walkers to start his lion pack. He went to Lester Nance,( Nance Little Topper blood), Joe House ( House's Bawlie blood) and John Monroe Finley river Cheif Blood) and built a pack of big game hounds that is still maintained and bred by his son the famous lion hunter rancher Warner Glenn of Douglas, Arizona and his Grand daughter Kelly Kimbro a great lion hunter, cowgirl, actress and model.
MARVIN WAS THE SORT THAT IT DIDN'T TAKE NO PRACTICED EYE TO TELL YOU THERE WASN'T ONE THREAD ABOUT HIM THAT SPELLED DUDE. HE WAS THE REAL DEAL!!!

I have trouble the best of days rememberin my own name, or that of my hounds for that matter, how you manage to maintain the wealth of knowlage you do with hound bloodlines, breeding and people old and dew is a trait few have.
Whens that book coming out your going to write?
It's time something like what you just mentioned gets published so there is a record for us who have memory loose to refer to.

Re: Marvin Glenn real or Hollywood?
Thanks for all the info, And forgive my ignorance on the subject, I had never heard any mention of Marvin in the past, then again I'm just learning so don't know much.
I was also unaware of the reason for the stick in the mouth, well other from the obvious reason of gnawing on the horse or unwary person on the way out.
Sounds like the wetback hound might be worth watching just to see what is there.
I think that sometimes you guys that have been doing this for a lifetime forget how fascinating and interesting the history you know by heart can be to a relative newby.
I agree that Mr. Leonard would be a good historian of the
" Lion Hunters of North America"
And I was in no way implying that I thought the guy (Marvin) in the show was a dude,
it was obvious the footage was real I thought an actor was portraying the part of Marvin and they brought in some real guy to do the deed, well that came out wrong but you know what I mean.
thanks for the history lesson

Awhile back on this fourm this topic was mentioned , and I still believe Mike could share an amazing amount of history by publishing a book related to just what Ken has said.
Maybe when you get settled in that chair some winter Mike you'll know when the time is appropriate to do something of this nature.

I have heard Marvin's name mentioned but never knew anything more than he was a southwest lion hunter.

Re: Marvin Glenn real or Hollywood?
2ndhound,
You are correct Warner's daughter and Marvin's grand daughter. Warner is getting long in the tooth but still whipping and spurring and chasing them lions. Marvin his Dad was also one of a kind and the real catalyst for this whole Malpias Ranch down there in the Douglas area. I was proud to know Marvin and have a great photo of him training a young mule in the home corral on my desk. I spoke with him on the phone and recieved a Christmas card from him that year just before he went on to a higher level of mountains beyond that great divide to hook up with Clell and Dale and Giles to chase a few more longtails. .....
Brent the book may come but I got some dog gone pups that need some miles so I reckon I will have to wait a bit for that spot by the fire.
Keep watching for my King Wolf!

Ill be the first one to sign up on a waiting list for a book that has not even been made. Your wealth of knowledge is amazing and i will always do outside searches to learn more about the information you give, but i am sure there is a lot more that could be told. Thanks for sharing Mike, I always look forward to reading what you post.

Hey Mike,
Will that book have a chapter on the demise of the speed goat and the prayre dog tamals? There's a lot of good stories in between the histories!
