livetohunt,
Giving a guy advice when he asks for advice is not bashing his dogs. Offering possible solutions to a question that the author feels is important enough to ask the hound hunting world is not bashing his dogs. If you live out there and used to hunt with the guy and you can't find time to make it out for a hunt, how do you expect people from across the country to make the trip? If he did not want to start the conversation, he would not have started the conversation.

Dogs may be worn out from getting out run by those 54 bears in 26 days. Dogs may need some rest.

We all know things happen from time to time but something that never changes is that top hounds catch game,no excuses.
Re: bears 50 me 11 whats going on
Maybe you are hunting a area that gets alot of hound hunters and the bears are just harder to hunt from being ran so much, they do get that way. We hunted pretty much the same area all year, during spring and the training season we was catching a bear or two just about everytime out, by the fall season the same bears had been ran so much that they were in great shape and knew how to run the dogs, it got almost imposible to put one in a tree. We was getting races everyday but wasnt catching them like earlier in the year, but neither was anyone else that hunted that area.

You asked for opinions/ideas so here is mine.
If you haven't been to the vet yet then my guess is that you don't have any of your dogs even getting close enough to bite the bear. No teeth in a bear, usually means not many bears in a tree.
Remember everyone has an oppinion - right or wrong
Need to get a couple dogs that bite. I say a couple becuase if you have only one it will either end up dead or will quite bitting like the other ones - unless it is just plain crazy.
ps:I don't mind a crazy bear dog - then again I think a good bear dog is crazy otherwise why would a 50lb dog pick a fight with a 200lb bear.

Big Bite ; Don't agree with you . Would much rather have a SMART Hound than a Stupid Crazy Hound . TOO much Grit is NOT good . Hence my dislike for PLOTTS . My Vet seems to think that breed for Breed the Plotts get themselves in trouble more than other breeds .

Grit is great but there is a big difference in a dog that goes and bites a bear in the ass and one that tries to bite a bear in the face when it is reared up on 2 legs waiting to pounce a dog.

To Crittergetter;it is hard to suggest what to do in your situation i don't no your hounds but yes there is an issue there, those are not good odds it doesn't matter where you are hunting or what size bears you run.
My guess a few things you can try or that i no is a lot of packs of dogs look great but if you take that one leader out of the pack it is not the same an nothing goes rite or the bear don't get forced to climb. my guess is that you lost a dog in your pack such as being sold, died or one of your 10 year olds was the leader an the age slowed the the dog down and is holding up the rest, try to hold the old dogs maybe an just run your 2 2 year olds. save the old ones to pack in later,by now the 2 year olds should be able to tree there own bears,i don't no your exact deal there but that is my opinion, the guys that are worried about the grit is not a big deal at this stage, the dogs are not catching bears there is a problem to get to the bear so rite now grit would be step 2.
Hope this will help crittergetter and no i am not bashing yours dogs just given my thoughts.

Jeez I better hunt more, never seen a bear rear up on 2 legs in a bayed up situation. My dogs must not be good enough to hang with with that tough of a bear.

I did actually kill a bear in that situation once, the dogs were bayed in some thick stuff, and I was within 10 yards but couldn't see good enough to shoot.I think the bear maybe winded me and stood up to look, but when he stuck his head up I shot him.I always thought the bear stood up on 2 legs, but now I'm not sure, maybe he just stuck his head up.It wasn't a big bear, and if I had real bear dogs they would have had him pinned to the ground when I got there.

i dont want to start a pissing match but i will say judge the bear before you judge a beardog i was raised in that country you are hunting in and hunted alot over in the valley as well totaly different bears some times when you think your dogs are treed for a short time i would be willing to bet the bear is just sitting on an oldgrowth stump in all that damb reprod not in a tree their are several guys in that area that tree or stop 95% of the bears they turn on they had dogs that were born and raised with in 50 miles of the area you are hunting they no longer hunt there do to political bs
