Price of hay
Price of hay
Just wondering what folks are having to pay for hay around the country. I'm up to $15 for two wire bails. Hear it may hit $20-25 by February . Gonna be a bunch of horses turned out on forest land I'm thinking.
when in doubt turn em out
Re: Price of hay
contracted mine in june got two semi loads 210 dollars a ton big ton bails i here the big ton bails could go to $300 a ton hope people dont turn them out on the forrest when they can sell them at the local sale barn and get less for them there. than it cost to feed them for one month.
Re: Price of hay
I think I might shoot half of mine for dog food and head to the auction for a upgrade. Plan on keeping the easy keepers that can make it on tumbleweeds and cotton stalks. Lol well maybe just those that can handle creosote brush. Its ridiculous milk and related products will go through the roof even though most of their feed is contracted for several years those that didn't will be subsidized or go under lots of "Angus" beef hitting the hamburger machine soon. I can feed straight supplement for the rest of the year and get by ok. Those folks who have to feed alfalfa or hay won't likely make it. Not when two horses will cost more then the mortgage. Last I checked over twenty dollars per three strand bale or approx 100 lbs. Five years from now horses are going to high and few. You can only hope quality goes up but I'm not sure that will be the case

Re: Price of hay
My brother in law just sold several truck loads that went to CO.. $300.00 a ton.. I bought my winter supply this last August $150.00 a ton.. which was a bargain. I think horses and mules are going to get cheap, and beef is going to go up..

Re: Price of hay
I feel bad for you guys down South. Hay around here is going for around $90 a ton, and I thought that was kinda high. Last year I bought 50 ton for $60 a ton plus delivery. Good hay too. How do you all make it work? I have a hard time justifying 90, let alone 200+.

Re: Price of hay
Anyone in the west seeing hay or cubes "not bagged pellets" being shipped by rail?
Re: Price of hay
Pegleg are you looking for cubes?? We've actually got two places here in southern Utah that turn out a pretty good product for a decent price. Most of the ones going by rail are going to the LA area to be shipped to Japan (from what the guys at the hay place told me).
As far as bales, we're sitting at around $12-$15 for two string bales down here - it's a joke!

Its $100-$200 a ton for good grass horse hay right know heare .. Alfalfa is 225to300 and most had to be hauled in .. Round silege bales for cows whent down there 25$to35$ know and weigh 800 to 1300 pounds .. The were 35to40$ this last sumer. Cheapest buy bale horse hay i found was 3.25 $ per 50 pound bale of exclent grass so 6.50 a 100 lbs ... I bought all my hay this year for 1$ a bale and they were 50 to 80 Pounds good grass and timothy farmer had to make room . Re: Price of hay
All hay whent up this year due to drought exports up and feedlots bought more cattle due to drought .. Last year i filled my hay barn whith good horse hay for 1$ a 50 pound bale and 2$ a 100 pound bale also bought some asome feeder hay for a quarter a bale all those fealds off hay this yr whent over seas and to feed lots this yr for way more $ . This year i bought 600 pounds off wheat straw for dog houses and it cost what 1000 pounds off hay cost me this yr. Way harder to get around hear do to dairys contracting it . Look at it this way if ya bucher your horses you wont have to buy much dog food that will save ya $ and your dogs and ya will have some good eats lol can you say horse jerky just right elk on package and sell it lol ..

Re: Price of hay
I'm not actively looking for hay just wondering at the price in different areas acting how it is. Normally you can always find pockets of low cost hay. Trucking has gotten so expensive I was wondering how much was being shipped by train. Not as many products switching over to train as I figured would be even though its the cheapest transport right now. Besides water which is limited. Grain is shipped by train routinely but hay just doesn't seem to be catching on. In this part of the country cotton is to blame with huge numbers of alfalfa growers making the switch. Not much long term sense in that and most are regretting hoping on the wagon. Americans aren't doing as much to protect themselves as they used to and its causing huge waves in all sectors. Guess you might say we need new leadership. Is there a decent goat market in your country?

Re: Price of hay
Pegleg goats cows and sheep ar sky high around heare but even pigs and fryer rabbit whent up a bit not usaual for this time yr .. There was less grass seed straw this year due to the grass seed farmers are converting some off there feilds to sheep pastures i know 10 farmers that harvested the seed this yr but didnt bother harvesting the straw to save on equpment and fuel cost they just turned the ewes and lambs out on it to clean it up and graze the new grass. A bunch off um will do that till jan feb then sell all sheep to let grass come back harvest seed and start all over againe . Some are selling off 90% there equipment and going to raise a little seed and a little straw/hay for feed and are going to mostly sheep and a few goats in there feailds to keep the sticker bushes and blackbearys out 1 farmer said this yr he saved 1000s $s on fuel spray labor and twine and seed storage cost it more then payed for his new fence and next year it more then payed for some winter feed for his stock .

Re: Price of hay
Sounds alright if a guy has feed and stock to sell. Not to great if your buying
