hound and bird dog pups whats your idea?

Post by allout treed »

My family's "bird dog" if you could say that. She is really a pet that is very hyper, she runs and runs and her stamina seams to never run out. Well she got out and and fooled a round with my brothers lion dog and she ended up with ten pups. Now I was wondering if this has ever happened to you and how did the pups turn out. I forgot to say that the father is a very stout and is the best dog we have for hunting.

I ve never X'd bird dogs on a hound. However I have hunted with X'd dogs and know of a few that turned out better then average dirt lion dogs. I wouldn't make one my first choice but its not going to be that different then many hounds they tend to ignore real cold tracks. I won't say they can't smell it I'm sure they do. The up side is typically the drive and wind scenting speed on good tracks. Which might eventually convince the dog to slow down and work a bad track when needed. I should point out the only breeds I've any experience with Xd is the english pointer and the german short hair. I've heard some northern guys have occasionally added some lab etc. To get more coat but can't say if its true or not.

Its worth a try, however, seems like when you breed away from the hound you start losing nose-speed ability

My old hunting buddy had a full GSP that would love to go with us when she could sneek into the box with the other dogs. She would go with the dogs to the tree and actually treed very well. But she was too aggressive on bears and we were worried she would get killed so we tried to always leave her at home.

Alot of birddogx's here in the south. lifreediver is correct, they cross them to make them silent. Some of the best crosses I have seen are birdxbulldog, birdxplott and birdxpitbulls.

The Germans actually created the GSP to be a versatile hunting breed. Not just a bird dog. So see if some of those other instictual hunting traits will come out. I to have heard they can be really gritty.

If you dont mind a little advice, I think it would be worth your time to take this litter out for walks. Just observe the pups, watch which one's carry the most hound traites. If it was my litter I would be looking for the one that quickly recognise's a track trying to move it with scent and then with sight then back to scent. Trying to put it together using their natural ability. Get an old rag, sock, coon tail or short rope, play with the pups, make sure you have their attention and toss the rag onto a bush or fence above their heads. Watch which one attempts to locate or look for the object, maybe even naturally tree.(watch their eye's, look for intelligence). Keep in mind your not training these pups just yet, your just looking for the one with the most natural ability. Now the most important part once you have found the pup with the most natural ability. Send it to me. . Just kidding. But seriously sometimes these crosses produce our best hounds. Hope this helped, happy thanksgiving. John.

wish you lived closer been wanting to try a bird dog crossed on a hound or cur for a hog dog . dont think a bird dog does not have a good nose they just use it differnt than a hound plus most of them have a big motor. give them a try good luck.
