What's the strangest breed/cross of coon dog you've used?

Post by coonslayer »

 Generally coonhound breeds are the best getting raccoons up the trees. But there are always exceptions. I have an Akita/standard schnauzer mix that has a warm to hot nose and just started hunting one day. No formal training at all. His first tree was a double and he dispatched both of them by himself in less than 3 minutes. That started my addiction. Let's hear what the strangest dog I sthat you've seen or heard of that does a decent job hunting. I'm attempting to post some pics of Bowser my dog but I'm a caveman and suck at technology so well see.

I had a schnouzrer , yorki mix growing up for our house dog. After having a hound in the back yard he would tree coons at the house in the backyard. Never really hunted him, but pissed my mom off..

i had a pittbull that treed alot of coons, i believe he would rather tree than eat. my boy took him squirrel hunting one day and that bulldog showed him 6 squirrels in 30 mintues, the guy he was hunting offered him alot of money for him but my boy wouldnt take it. lol

My gf got a Blue Heeler/Australian Shepherd. She wants to make a coon dog. She shows more drive than the Cat/Hound I just gave to my gfs Aunt. I guess we will see. I have heard of them making hog dogs. Never a coon dog though.

we have a austrailian sheperd that killed coons around the farm forever he'd kill one and bring it up and put it in the garage and during the winter it was an everyday occurence. He would go down and just wait by the corn pile until he seen a coon and would go after it. He's 12 now so the coon killing has slowed down but he'll still go out and try but he loses the fight quite a bit now.
If it has fur I chase it.

I would imagine that if your lab has the desire to hunt and a strong nose he could do just fine. Cage a coon if you can and see what he does. If he likes it then let it loose and turn your dog loose a few minutes later.

My step dad has had labs my whole life. They will flat out get nasty with a coon or anything else that they are told its ok to. They just know house cats aren't ok feral cats coons opussoms yotes whatever else comes in the yard are free game. Never seen anyhting leave the yard that wasn't supposed to be there.

I believe it all comes down to the dog. I have a Catahoula/Hound cross that has no interest in hunting anything but a food dish and a under the covers with my gf. But my Great Pyrenees will will run a hot coon track and tree with my walker female on a cage coon. Never tried her actually hunting she isn't fast enough to keep up with a hound. But great at keeping unwanted critters out of the yard.
