Heard more than one old cat hunter say "If he can find a bird he can find a cat." :D

I have had a conversation with Dave Carlson in Yarnell az he is in my book as close o an expert on this subject as anyone and he says the cross doesnt seem to put more or less nose on the dogs just seems to give them more brains and stamina

Not sure if this is usefull or not, but a few years ago I had a young untrained German Wirehair That accompanied me out in the hills. At about 40 yards a good sized bob popped up out of a wash-out in the middle of a sloping grass field. the Wirehair chased the cat about 260 yards until it treed in the only one in a 300 yard radius. The dog didn't make much fuss under the cat though, rather she continued to scent around the base of the tree. I finally caught up with the two and kept the dog at heel. I studied the cat from all sides at only 8 feet and then we left it alone. Another time with the same dog, we were walking along a brushy crick bottom, when a tom bob blew out the other side and tailed it up to a saddle in the hills. The dog ran in the same direction and only finally started to scent were the cat apparently slipped into hideing. The saddle had deep washed sink holes, and the dog was trying to make sense of the smells, while at the same time mr. bob was sneaking between me and my dog, only to elude us both. So, my experience with a bird dog was kinda cool, however, the dog sighted the cat in both circumstances and then ran it, rather than trailing it like a hound. Also, the dog was silent on the trail, as well as when it was on hot scent, and even at the tree. The sraight bird-dog was working cats for sure, but if crossed with a true hound could only make it much better. If you have the time and patience to keep them and work with your x-breeds, you might get suprised on the mix of both traits. Good luck and keep us posted!

Give them a try. I have seen quite a few bird dog x hound crosses and was very impressed. They were good meat and hide dogs. There are a lot of them around Oklahoma and Arkansas. Good luck.
