Silent trailer
Silent trailer
I have a dog that rarely opens on track. Cold or Hot, it doesnt matter. I've only had him on coon so far and wont open till he hits the tree. He is supposed to be hell on bobs but he barely opens at all. what does that do to a race? I had a silent cold trailer before, but never had this happen. He is real fast. Any thoughts on what to expect this coming cat season? Anybody have any dogs like this?

Re: Silent trailer
If its a real cat dog its going to catch a lot of them on the ground and at the lest it will be a short race great for catching just not good for training pups in less you walk the pup to the tree and jump it out then let the pup go with the old dog but the pup will have to have its head in the game.

Re: Silent trailer
Sounds like a awesome dog, with being silent should be shorter chase. I say hunt him or do you want to sell him.

Re: Silent trailer
I dont want to sell him, he is the best handling dog i've ever seen. i've just never heard of a dog that barely opened at all and wasn't sure of what to expect. i appreciate the replies.. keep em comin!

Re: Silent trailer
if your catching game i would think thats what would be important. A lot of cat hunters like the more silent dogs. I have a young female right now and she will not bark on track or at the tree. She will locate at the tree even put her feet on the tree just doesn't say a word. She is at every tree i turn her out on though and the best listening dog i have so i keep on taking her. Maybe ill just get her a bell.

Sounds like a good dog! I just bought this one over the summer and haven't had him on anything but coons yet. We havent had the snow here to run on cats, but its coming soon. Wasnt sure what a mostly silent trailer would do to a race when he is ran by himself.

Re: Silent trailer
Just for the record down south I dont know of any cathunters that want a silent hound. We want a dog to bark correct alot because we wont to hear a race. If my hounds would not bark I would start trapping and just walk up ther a shoot the cat. I dont kill cats unless the dogs can catch it because the race is what im after not the kill. just saying!

Re: Silent trailer
I've seen first hand , that a silent trailer (cold OR hot) can be DEADLY when it comes to running bobs. The dang cat dont know its on 'em til a lot later than if the dog where wide open during the chase.
Good luck, hope you have a garmin astro 220 with a DC30 (DC30!!!! collar and you could do wonders in the woods. You'll know where your dogs at (BUT the KITTY might NOT!!!
). Again, good luck.

Re: Silent trailer
With a silent dog you will more than likely be stuck with a one dog race, not very exciting.
Re: Silent trailer
DeVuono311 , Thanks for the info! I'm gettin pumped! I have garmins with DC30 collars so i'm ready to roll with a silent dog if i have to! I have a couple other dogs as well.
Major, It is a walker. Do you hunt bobs here in pa too?

Re: Silent trailer
You can dump your open dogs first and then use the silent dog as a gauge of the race. That's how my pack works at the moment. If you get a rock pile kitty dump the solo dog.mondomuttruner wrote:With a silent dog you will more than likely be stuck with a one dog race, not very exciting.
Re: Silent trailer
Unreal_tk, a lot of the cats here are rock pile kittys. Do you dump the silent dog on those because they catch the cat before it makes it to the rocks?
Re: Silent trailer
If you are running it with other dogs it wont take many times for the other dogs to start paying pretty close attention to where that dog is. They learn pretty quick.
