WOLVES

I've got a pup I would like try to run on bobcats in the UP. Does anyone in michigan or any other state for that matter have problems with them while bobcat hunting? I ask as when I go up bear hunting I see wolf tracks everywhere!

Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan all have wolf issues.


The only positive I can tell ya is at least in the winter you can track off a section to see if wolves came in or out. Guess other good thing is that generally with bobcats you are close to the dog to break things up, but it can happen fast.


My advice would be to talk to hunters in the area you are planning on hunting to find out problem wolves / no fly zones. Some packs are definitely more "hungry" than others.

we have seen plenty of wolf tracks this winter while running on cats. we were lucky enough not to have any problems with crossing them. were we hunt we have lots of roads to look though to make sure they are out of the area. but we do have a major problem with them around here. the tend to move south with the deer for the winter. we had a pack of four cross a hundred yards behind the house last winter. not a good feeling.

I Live in West Michigan and had plans to head to the U.P. for some Bob hunting this winter then was warned by some seasoned hunters who refuse to bring their hounds into the U.P. due to Wolves.

If your scared to hunt your dogs might as well sell out..wolves are here there an every where..Can't hunt around them anymore in Wisconsin ..dump your dogs an hope for the best. Just sayin

Sorry to hear about Wisconsin, however, VAST majority of Wolves of Michigan reside in the U.P. (which is obviously connected to Wisconsin... heh, how about that? Starting to make sense....)

I can comfortably run dogs in the L.P. of MI and not worry a pack of Wolves may grab hold of my prize dogs.

I reckon its all a matter of personal opinion. We are all allowed to share our own.

I agree with you bigbear. I guess I have been lucky, but I would just feel so lonely out there if I did not have all the wolves to keep me company . I could wish there were no deer so my young culls could look a lot better . I would sure have more places to hunt if we could destroy all the highways. Those southern boys would probably like to kill all the snakes and alligators. We all would surely love traps to be out of the woods.

I dont know, it is seriously just part of the experience for me. I know people will misunderstand my feelings about it, but to me, the more wild stuff out there, the better. If you want everything safe, stay home and watch hunting shows on TV, and take your dogs to dog shows.

I know there are areas where it is impossible to stay with your dogs, such as the canyon country out west. I can make no comment for that area. But I know what the UP looks like.

Stay with your dogs, and hunt 'em. I have had wolves all around me and the dogs, and talking to me, and I never had a problem. Stay with your dogs.

Once it becomes legal to kill wolves, things will be as they should. Just my opinion. but they just need to learn a little more respect for the things humans value.

Stay with your dogs. that is your only hope from the conibear trap as well. Learn how to set one, and how to open one up. Your dog will be fine, if you are there to take it off.
