HELP I need advice how to trane scared coon hound!

Postby Intherain » Mon Dec 12, 2011 11:49 pm

I have problem dog, he's real scared of everything. We were told that he's a coon hunting machine and we have taken him out about three times a week with another coon dog and he stays by our side and is almost afraid to hunt! He bellows at home but won't do it in the woods when actually tree something. He's very gun shy, we shoot the gun and he takes off and hides and we won't see him for 30 min. Or longer. I've been taunting him with a hide and he wants to attack but he's scared. When he does attack it I'll start moving it and he runs off! HELP I need advice! We are told he a mix of red tick and I think blue tick. Looks just like a red bone. He's been watching my blue heeler and I with coon hide and he's been wanting to play but real scared! HELP

How old is the dog? Did you pay for it? Does it always act shy? Is it getting along with your other dog? Is or was this dog chained? Have you hit, yelled or scolded the dog? Does it know any commands or tricks ? Answer these and maybe some one can point you in the right direction.

Dog is about a year and a half. Hes not neutered. Would that help to get him neutered? We didn't pay for him, he was given to us by a guy that had a lot of coon dogs on chains wanting shorten his pack. We were told he coon hunts every night with the dogs, he said that this litter of pups all of them acted just like this dog. He is extremely shy and it's taken him a couple of week just to get used to us. He's Very timmed around my husband but not scared of me, he does follow most commands I give him but it taken a lot of work to get him to come when I say come etc. we have never raise our voices or hit him, but If you lift a hand in the air or move at him or around him fast he cowers. He has gotten along with every dog we've brought him around and our dog to with no problem. But was scared to death of my neighbors chiwawa and hide behind to house and started shaking.

Getting him neutered wont help , it sounds like the guy you got him from culled him for a reason. Im not saying your dog will never hunt coons but you got your work cut out for you. If your gonna keep him and try to get him to hunt , forget about hunting for a lil while and focus on building his confidence, once hes not scared of you anymore then you can work on him hunting again. when you get to that point try tying him back and letting him watch another dog work a rollcage good luck!

Dogs that are "coon hunting machines" aren't just given away. Just be super positive with the dog, take baby steps and I would HIGHLY recommend you don't show this dog a caged coon!

There's two causes for this behavior one is genetic and its Extremely rare no matter what anyone says. The other is lack of socializing as a pup and negative interaction only. This is what you have I would bet my last dollar. If you can deal with a shy dog fine. Some do come out of it but its rare and takes a long time and that's a long time working with him. The thing to do is just stop hunting for awhile absolutely stop shooting around him. Unfortunately he may always be sensitive to raised hands etc. When you pet him pet under his chin I don't recommend this often and only with very mild mannered dogs. Let him watch daily activity and buddy up with your dog monkey see monkey do make sure your dog isn't sending signals to him to scare him. Food rewards are going to have to be the order of the day to get him interacting by choice. I'm surprised you didn't loose him when you took him hunting. Typically these types of dogs are the ones that happens too.
Cutting him has nothing to do with this behavior and I wouldn't as it might be harder on him. If you can work with him and get him to follow you and come when called easily you can start working on other manners and training the issue here is trust and never get angry or act that way. I don't keep dogs in the house but in a case like this its usually best if your in the home too. He will notice that Most of the time your not scolding or bothering him just because your close to him. It just takes a lot of work. Especially if you aren't patient or have the experience. Good luck. If you need more help feel free to pm me

Thanks for all your help we are going to give it a try. Do you have any advice on certain breeds? Before my husband brought home this dog I was talking about getting a blue tick female, what hood lines should I look for and does anyone know any breeders in Kansas? Same question about Black and tans? I'm gonna work with this dog first but I wanted to know for future perpises. Thanks

Hello im a Coon hunter from Oklahoma just south of ya. My advice on the cross bred dog you have that is scared, is to find him another home for someone who will treat him good as a pet....Maybe a young boy or girl, but if he is a year and half your just wasting good hunting time in the woods, YES he may come around but at that age he should be going a little, and most hounds are not scared and jumpy of ANYTHING. Thats why they are used for hunting. To your other question about what breed to get...everyone on here will suggest a different breed because of this or that. Just go with a good breed dog of any color, if your just getting into hunting pick the breed that you think has the best looking color scheme and body build that you like and GO HUNTING...You cant go wrong with ANY breed of Coon Hound cuz they are all good, but I would atleast get something that has papers and some good hunting breed dogs in its bloodlines.

Best of luck to ya...and Good hunting.

I'm not sure where your located but there's a man in southeast co. That runs some good black dogs but then there's quit a few in that area including oklahoma to the south you get more walker guys and on the northern kansas co line there's some blue dogs that I'm pretty sure are hammer /jet bred. Watch the parents hunt before you buy a pup.

Those shy dogs are an extreme lot of work to bring out of their shell. pegleg's advice is excellent, but if you want a hunting dog, it will take years of work to bring this dog around, and it may never happen. meanwhile, I'd just bring the dog with you everywhere you can and let it bond with you without asking much of it.

If you want a bluetick or black and tan, go to the association websites, and order their yearbooks.

Or, you could go to a competition hunting event near you and ask people with the color dogs you like if they know of any young dogs available.

You could also try posting on the UKC or coondawgs.com classifieds sections for those dogs, but you won't know much about who you're dealing with.

Make sure you hunt with any dog before you buy it. Most reputable people will let you try a hunting dog for awhile and give your money back if you want to return the dog.

I think for upland hunting you might be able to get a dog that is shy or had a bad experience and with a lot of positive re-enforcement type training- get them back in the game but for coon hunting, etc IMHO you need a dog that is "game" and I'm not certain that can be developed by any sort of training. The pet idea seems about the only option.

Thankyou everyone for all your help! We wound up haveing to find that dog a new home. I tried to keep him with me and let him get more used to us and I guess he started to get territorial of me and growled at my son so we found a guy that could spend more one on one time with him. I hope that if anyone else that has the same problem would follow the great advice. Thanks again
