opinion on hunting out of a suv

hey everyone im wondering your opinion on hunting out of a suv. just because i wanna something with more room. i was thinking a bronco II or a toyota 4runner. any opinions would be great. i coon hunt and bear hunt

All that i can think of is that at times it is not going to smell real good. Hope you have something else to drive on a date lol.

I can tell you from experience its nice for the dogs and the room is sweet but having the dogs even in a solid box in there with you sucks. If they are having a bad day and get into a skunk or have gas that day it sucks for you. If your still going to do it then any box will work and just get a hood rug for rigging. And when it comes to a hood rug they can be fun as well just wait till your rig dog pisses in your air vent or takes a dump on your windshield. I will never hunt out of an suv again or use a hood rug but what ever works best for you. Happy hunting.

I hunt out of my durango. I made a platform that fits in my hitch receiver so that i can put my dog box outside if need be. As for skunks my dog doesnt chase skunks so good there! the platform works great, i put a mat in the back for when i keep the box inside so that it doesnt get dirty.

I am using on older isuzu trooper. I box them off the hood. The back end is sealed off with plywood plexiglass caulking and spray foam. This did fix the smell but was a pain to build.I built a platform over the fender wells for the dogs to be on this gave me storage underneath.I use under bed storage containers to keep stored stuff clean.The hard part is getting the dogs enough air.I built a fan wich works fine for winter but any sunny days this spring I am going to have replace the side windows with diamond plate and holes.I mounted a small box on top for storage. On the pluss side for about $1600 including the cost of the rig,the plywood ,tires (2 used and two new that were on it when I bought it) pluss about two weeks after work and on weekends building the fan and doing the back end I have a rig thats not not to bad to hunt out of. My sons can ride with me bring there girlfriends and share gas wich helps. I fit five dogs in it fine they can all lay down.Have had six but they better all get along good. If I could aford it a four door pick up would be better.Butt this is working for me for now. Good luck Larry

I hunted with a Chev Tracker for a few years. I had a box mounted on the hitch but the frame was not thick enough and the bolts pulled through. I loved the extra space but did not like rigging and the dogs got shook up a bit more that in a pick up. It would make a good cold weather set up for a couple dogs.

I hunted out of a Jeep Cherokee for years. I put a mover's pad on the back seat and they rode there. They rigged out the windows. Worked fine for me. Kept unwanted people from taking rides from me sometimes. Not everyone appreciated the funky hound smell, but it didn't bother me except when they rigged too close to my ear. Never got stuck anywhere in that Cherokee either.

Used a suburban during the winter months for a few years. Dogs loved it being kept nice and warm on them cold days. I would not own a burb without cargo doors so that made it nicer. To keep them from running amuck in the truck. I took a 1x4 and screwed it right into the sides. Then added eye bolts and chains to keep them in place. Worked out great.

Then my bear truck blew a tranny just 2 days before kill season. So the burb went back into action. But had to have rig holes, and a way to help cool them off if it got hot. So I knocked out the drivers side back window. Screwed a piece of luan over and cut some rig holes. If it got hot could pull the whole piece off. Put a hinged cover for the holes as well.

It was nice having the extra room for passengers. Real nice for winter hunting when cold. Might be a bit hot though for our summer training season and early fall hunts. I suppose rear A/C would fix that. Then might as well give them a TV, and wet bar. Does also limit the amount of dogs though. 6 is about all that area could hold well.

There nice and have some advantages, but it's hard to beat the versatility of a pick up.
