Has Anyone Had A Hound Get Salmon Poisoning?

Post by Mackdog »

I noticed my redbone getting pretty mopey, his coat looked rough and he wasn't eating. Soon after I noticed swollen lymph nodes under his jaw. Took him to the vet and they checked his poo for a fluke worm, it turned out to be what they call salmon poisoning. A liver fluke worm that has a bacteria associated with it. He was chewing on a steelhead carcass that didn't get taken care of properly by a roommate. The vet prescribed Doxycline (antibiotic) and some anti-nausea pills. They gave him an anit-nausea shot ($50) that appeared to make him worse so I didn't give him the pills. They wanted to keep him overnight to put him on an IV for fluids and the Doxy, I said no way...ended paying them 70 bucks I didn't need to. After shoving pills down his throat for a day and a half he was back to 100 percent. He stayed on the antibiotics for about a week.

almost once a year here in the northwest a dog or dogs will get it.the secret is to let them get the fever before you treat them[usually 2days]then start them on the tetracyclene or the doxi go for 7-to 10 days, tehy usually are immune to it after they get the fever, some will get it again.

I let it go for a few days hoping he could fight it off (before I knew what it was), he wasn't getting worse but he wasn't getting much better. He should have built an immunity. Do you still have to worry about the fluke worm doing liver damage if they pick it up again?

When I lived over on the Washington Coast our dogs would get Salmon Poisoning. Most of the time after they got it and were treated for it they didn't get it again.

But I have seen a couple dogs get it again but that was rare.
See You in the Woods!!!!
