Western Great Lake Wolves delisted today!

Western Great Lake Wolves delisted today!
Folks,

Huge breaking news today. Wolves are now officially delisted in the Western Great Lakes. Interior Secretary Salazar made the announcement this morning. The delisting rule takes affect in 30 days. Wisconsin plans to start managing wolves on February 1, 2012. We are waiting from official announcements from Minnesota and Michigan as well.

Another very important aspect of the delisting is that USFWS has rejected arguments that two species of wolves exist in the Western Great Lakes. What this means is that all wolves can be managed without complications that could result from two different wolf species designations.

The publication of this delisting rule does not stop litigation challenges to the Western Great Lakes delisting. Watch for any legal challenges to the delisting in coming weeks that could stop management actions in Wisconsin, Michigan or Minnesota.

However, this is another important step forward that deserves our support. More importantly it confirms what Big Game Forever and sportsmen all over America have been saying. Wolves are not endangered. It is now time for states to be able to manage their wolf populations

This is a very, very small step in the right direction. It will be years before the 500 or so wolves that need to thinned out actually get thinned and by that time the population will be double again. Without drastic measures, I think we are stuck with them for a long while. The only thing their going to do now is give out permits to landowners for problem wolves which wouldn't put a dent in the population.

This is a very interesting topic! Just a while ago, I also read an article connected with this sensational issue. The post was entitled "Gray Wolves taken off Endangered Species List".

As we all know, for the past forty years, the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service has protected the population of the gray wolf in some states such as Michigan, Wiscosin and Minnesota. After expending millions of dollars on the survival of the said species, the recovery goals were met. The gray wolf will be taken off the Endangered Species List because the population of the wolves in the Great Lakes region are now strong and no longer need government protection.

However, the lifted protection could pave the way for wolf hunting seasons, and this is definitely a menace! That is why wolf relocation has been suggested so that they can thrive and not be hunted. Well, I just hope that wolf recovery will continue to aggrandize, and people must realize that gray wolf must not be feared because the key with wolves is human tolerance.

Kate, why are you on this site? Isn't there a tree somewhere you should be hugging??

Kate,

We would be glad to load up a few horse trailers full of the " not to be feared wolves " and bring them down to your backyard if you would rather they be relocated! That was such an ignorant reply to post on a hound forum.

It is a step in the right direction. Besides with our DNR in charge of wolf management they should be darn near eradicated in about 5 years. That's what happened with the deer in the north. :D

Kate, Ugh maybe you should hang out in the real world for awhile. Farmers and Hunters "tolerance" boiled over about 10 years ago and now they can actually set up a plan to reduce the number of wolves. The orignal recovery plan set 350 wolves as the ideal target amount for WI's habitat. The count is at nearly 800 now. Until you get to carry out the parts of a what's left of your dog or calf, and constantly have to keep guard of your livestock you don't have a clue what you're talking about.

I'm sure you feel the same way BUT that number they estimate is laughable...

Yeah, I should have put "their" count in there. "Their" count is roughly 38 for our entire county. Well these 38 must run non-stop at night to put down the number of tracks you can find in a morning. :D

People getting shot in the concrete jungle is an everyday occurrence and the tree huggers don't lift an eye but heaven forbid if one of those poor little ol wolves get shot. Makes me sick just thinkin bout it.
Kate, get a life and save a kid not a wolf....

The articles I have read, state the wolves had been removed twice already in the past 5 yrs. but due to animal right groups, they were placed back on the list. COME ON people!!!! What would it take, your child to get attacked before you took it seriously?
I agree with Walker dog, it could be awhile before we can take action. Its a step in the right direction but we are far from being in the right spot for acting on it again... Hang in there guys, we may need to make many more calls to state reps before someone takes it serious... I know we are competitive houndsmen (and women too :D ) but I like to think of us as brothers and sisters, I mean we are all in for the same rights arent we?

Good luck ya'll...

Last fall a neighbor of mine shot a wolf because he and his family were out for a walk and the wolf showed up and was circling them. He shouted at it trying to scare it off but it would not leave. He got his gun and when the wolf came back again he shot it. The feds came in got the animal and tested it for rabies and to see if it was a hybrid. It tested negative for both. If it would have just been his kids out there no telling what would have happened. This was a wolf that had been seen in the area for several years. Wolves are losing there fear of man and that needs to change.

I agree it has been proven over and over you have to hunt them or they lose their fear of man, and will start attacking us.

I agree. kate has no place on a site like this. I allso agree with most said on here, but one thing, I am from eastern upper michigan and the wolves here have never showed any fear of human. one is a fool to walk the woods of this area with out carrying a gun. they will surround you and bout make you crap your pants
